“Extremely dated and overpriced”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

We stayed here for one night to catch up with friends who were staying in the nearby campsite. It was not a pleasant experience. The hotel obviously trades on its amazing view and is desperately in need of refurbishment. Our room had a hole in the carpet, fur along the lining in the bathroom and furniture that was well past its best. The hairdryer was dangerous and took a chunk of my hair out (there was a previous hair from someone else already in there) and the whole room needed a good clean. Having read the reviews about the food I thought breakfast might be better but the dining room was dated, particularly the carpet which wasn't clean and had snail trails on it. Not the best environment in which to eat. The owner was on reception when I checked out and didn't even ask if I had enjoyed our stay which quite frankly speaks volumes.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and we are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. We have recently completed a refurbishment of £450,000 so very much you would try us again in the future.

Don't get me wrong, there were some serious plus points for this hotel... The Saturday night Smorgasbord was great, but I cant help wishing we'd spent less on staying in the lodge & opted for the main hotel... Our accommodation really wasn't worth the money paid, but, the bar, restaurant & hotel facilities were great!

Thank you for your review, however we actually sold the Lodge in October 2012 so we do not understand why you are saying you stayed in the Lodge recently. We are glad you enjoyed the Hotel facilities and food, we have now added an extension of 10 new superior rooms to replace the Lodge so very much hope you will come back and experience this in the future.

We ate in the hotel restaurant twice recently and were so impressed we're planning a return visit to stay in the hotel. The evening menu was fresh, locally sourced and beautifully cooked. The views over the bay were amazing and one night we saw a dolphin. The hotel has access to a beach, a swimming pool and beautiful surroundings. Lovely.

We stayed here for a night in June as a birthday treat. The hotel has a fantastic view over the sea which you can take in from the multi level gardens. The staff were all extremely friendly and when we got to our sea view room we couldn't have been happier. The window offered great views across the gardens and the room itself was large and comfortable. The bathroom was also clean and modern with an extremely powerful shower! The evening meal had a 'smorgasbord' starter which had a large array of fish, pasta, salad items etc. A great selection to choose from. The main meals were also very well cooked and brought to us quickly. Deserts were a selection of icecreams and cheesecakes which we just about managed after the previous two courses! The pool could do with updating a little bit, the retractable covered was a little dated but is very practical for the unpredictable British weather. A note that there are no lifeguards on duty though so children must be closely supervised. Breakfast in the morning couldn't be faulted and we went back to the room to pack thoroughly full and satisfied! All in all a lovely relaxing evening away in a hotel that I would highly recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: There are only a couple of balcony rooms, so book early and treat yourself!

Thank you for your review, we are really pleased that you enjoyed your Sea View room, our Gardens, our Smorgasbord and our breakfast:and we will be sure to pass on your lovely comments to our Kitchen Staff. We do take all reviews seriously and in January we are closing the pool for renovation work. However because the pool isn't open to the general public we do not need to have a lifeguard, but children are not allowed into the pool area without adult supervision. We do hope that you will come and visit us again soon.

We have just enjoyed a four day break at the Sandy Cove Hotel and must say the location was super as it was high up looking over the bay where you could dolphin watch free of charge! The food was excellent as were the staff. Without exception the waiters/waitresses were helpful and polite. The swimming pool at the bottom of the garden was brilliant for the grandchildren and they enjoyed playing in it after our trips to the beaches. The downside to the hotel was our room which was a family room (No. 22/23) and in much need of refurbishment and new carpet. The grandchildren had an adjoining room with a single bed and trundle bed which was very squeaky and not very comfortable. As the children were very young (6 and 7 years) it wasn't too much of a problem but any older children would struggle with the trundle bed. However, as the weather was reasonably warm we didn't spend a lot of time in the room. Our son had a sea view room and was happy with it. Combe Martin the nearest beach is very small and rocky and not very inviting - I would recommend travelling the 7/8 miles to Woolacombe beach which is much nicer and lovely fine sand.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room. The family room looked out onto a wall.

Thank you for taking your time to review our Hotel, we are so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and that your grandchildren enjoyed the pool: I will be sure to pass your lovely comments regarding the staff and food here. We are sorry however that your room wasn't as you had hoped, we are in the process of refurbishing our entire Hotel in time and we have this week ordered new beds. We do try to reflect the price on the quality of the rooms, but we do have other family rooms which are refurbished and do have a sea view and we hope that in the future you will come back and stay with us again soon.

We booked a last minute 3 night break at the Sandy Cove. While our top of the range bedroom with balcony and sea view, plus large comfy bed and super bathroom with walk in shower were fantastic, the rest of the hotel was a bit sad looking and needed to be refreshed. The evening dinners were "ok" but some starter portions were miniscule, as though they were running low on ingredients! We had to remind the waiting staff for our deserts on 3 occasions - once she admitted that the restaurant was chaos and that they had in fact lost our order! We couldn't criticise the young staff, they were very friendly and enthusiastic, but what was missing was a restaurant manager - in fact I didn't actually know who was "in charge" all through the stay. I had one swim in a very nice pool and spa complex. However, there was no supervision and many parents left their young children to get on with it, ignoring signs that "all children must be accompanied by an adult at all times" - sometimes it was very dangerous in that young children were jumping/diving into the pool with no adults present in what is actually a very deep pool - 2.5m. That being said we had a vey relaxing break in the sun on a nice terrace with lovely views and a dolphin! Will we go back - I am afraid not and will stay at the Tors Hotel at Lynmouth again next time.

Thank you for your review. The new superior bedrooms are of a very high standard and we are continually updating the rest of the Hotel. We are a 3 star hotel, as is reflected by our pricing, but we are delighted that you feel the standard of the rooms is of 5 star standard. We have spoken to both the Restaurant Manager & Assistant Restaurant Manager (who are always dressed in black suits) and they apologise for any problems you may have had in the restaurant. We are glad you liked the swimming pool, the sauna & steam room area has recently been refurbished and we have added heated relaxation loungers. With regard to other resident's children, we do have signs asking parents to supervise their children.

Sandy Cove is a wonderful place to stay. It is great value for money, great customer service and the food is 5* every time.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to couples of any age and families too. My kids love it, and on a recent stay I also took my parents who adored it.
Some would say the rooms themselves are not up to scratch for a modern hotel, and I suppose I would have to agree. There is an air of faded grandeur about the place. However, towels and linen are always clean and room service do a great job. The interconnecting rooms I booked this time for my kids and I turned out to be 2 full size bathrooms as well as the 2 bedrooms. Perfect.
The restaurant is the real jewel in the crown, and I would encourage you to stay here just for that! A modern, fresh approach using as many local ingredients as possible appears on the menu every night, beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Crisp samphire? Great local fish and seafood? Expertly cooked red meats? Intelligent vegetarian options? All available at Sandy Cove! Even the local butter was creamy, salty and very hard to resist!
I wouldn't change a thing at Sandy Cove if completely modernising meant doubling the price. This place is my bolt-hole and it's a love affair that will bring me back time and again.
And did I mention the great service? Attentive staff all round who carefully looked after my coeliac mum. Nothing was too much trouble.
And the views...? Did I mention them? Well, I won't - go there and prepare to be amazed!
