Stayed with family for a long weekend break 23rd-26th September in the Retreat 2 lodge at a cost of £350 (although there are occasional deals for last minute stays at Watermouth Lodges on Ebay, search for a seller called 'amberwood-devon'). Had a fantastic, chilled out weekend break and will definitely be returning. Lying in the hot tub whilst watching squirrels and birds hopping about in the trees above was my idea of complete relaxation. The lodge was more spacious than expected and my toddler loved running the length of it and as there is a secure gate on the decking area, toddlers are completely free to roam. I'll take peanuts next time as there's a bird table outside the Retreat lodge so I'm sure more wildlife would be attracted.

Lodge is very nicely decorated and well equipped (bath towels, tea towels and dish cloths not needed but do take loo rolls, dishwasher tablets, hand soap and a robe and flip flops for using the hot tub). Ate in the onsite restaurant and the food was lovely and very reasonably priced, good menu choices also and bar staff friendly and attentive. Went to the bar every evening even if only for a quick drink so little one could play in the outdoor play area, again, bar prices reasonable.

Indoor pool area and sauna was well maintained and there's a play pen in both sets of changing rooms so little ones can be contained whilst you change, a really thoughtful touch! Had the pool to ourselves every day which was great and there's a jacuzzi next to the pool which takes 50p for around 15 mins of bubbling, lovely.

The only reason I haven't given Watermouth 5 stars is down to there being a broken childs trike in the outdoor play area - either remove it or replace it - no hardship really and also the kingsize mattress in the Retreat was pretty manky and was covered by a mattress topper - I'm sure most people wouldn't even bother looking but I did and same again, would be much nicer if replaced.

Looking forward to next year's break already and hoping these minor changes are made.

Was a little worried about our break here last week (17-24 September) after reading earlier reviews about the Willow's standard lodge. Must say that it was OK for a lodge that takes dogs(what do you expect when dogs are allowed, the Ritz!) Bed's were a little uncomfortable but the lodge was clean, but yes dated but I can live with that.
Used to come to this site as a youngster in the late 60's early 70,s and we used to have great fun in the woods and across the bay opposite the castle. But now a lot of access to these area's have been blocked off (Private no admittance signs everywhere) Plus a big negative, no dogs allowed in the huge wood behind the lodges, which was most disappointing and seemed strange !! So I would not recommend this site for those taking dogs unless you wish to drive out to exercise them? Which is a shame.
Must mention the staff in the reception who were really helpful in providing vet details when our elderly dog had heart problems during our stay, and generally the staff in the clubhouse were really nice.
The big plus point is the Exmoor area around the lodges, Exmoor is very attractive and we had some nice days out(Lyton,Lynmouth, Watersmeet to name but a few). Went into Ilfracombe, which still remains grotty! which seems to be the case for donkey's years, shame as it's location is superb.
Overall good Holiday let down a little by dog walking restrictions around the site.

just arrived home from a lovely week in lodge 44- exec suite!
it was spacious and homely- clean and well equipped. we had three little ones under 3 yrs old and four adults in our party- it was great for the children and safe to let them wonder around the cabin.
the local area is beautiful i would recommend a coastal walk towards combe martin through the watermpouth valley camping field- breathtaking cliffs and secret beaches.

Room Tip: we booked the best lodge- we had it for an excellent price as we went off peak season. the hot tub...

We stayed in No 2 "The Retreat" for a week in September 2011 (booked direct, not via Hoseasons).
Lodge was big, plenty of room - king sized bedroom with big ensuite & jacuzzi bath, a double room, and a twin. Lounge/dining/kitchen area was decently sized with three 2-seater settees, a large dining table & chairs. Kitchen well equipped, had a washing machine and dishwasher, separate fridge & freezer. Plenty of plates, cooking equipment, cups, etc etc. In the wardrobes & cupboards we found a highchair & travel cot (which we hadn't ordered), iron, ironing board, clothes airer, etc etc.
I can't comment on other lodges, our particular lodge could do with a refresh. Although everything was adequate inside, tidy & functional, the carpets were due for replacement, some of the furniture could do with replacing, the outside of the lodge needed a really good clean as it was covered in cobwebs and the windows were smeared.
There was a distinct "DIY" feel to certain areas: the ensuite bathroom was decorated with a jolly sea/fish theme - a nice design, but the finish of the tiling, bath panels etc was very amateurish and let it down. Big LCD telly - but mounted crooked on the lodge wall, onto a sheet of visible chipboard; DVD player was on a crooked wall bracket next to the telly, with all the wires strung across the wall. All OK in general, just lacked the professional finish that you might expect for the price.
King size and double bedrooms both had TVs, but were older CRT tellys and couldn't receive digital stations so pretty pointless really. There was a Playstation 2 in one room with a few games.
Floors throughout the lodge creaked like hell, not a problem for adults, but if you've put young kids to sleep early in the evening, unless they're good sleepers you'll be worrying about waking them up every time you creak past to the loo...

Hot tub was nice and a decent size. The hot tub is covered by it's own wooden shelter to keep the rain (and leaves) off and gives some privacy from people walking/driving past to the other lodges.

Reception area was nice enough, pleasant and helpful staff. There is a bar & restaurant area (we didn't use it as we had two infants to look after in the evenings) which looked nice enough, menu looked decent and the signs suggested anything on the menu could be had as a takeaway. Small shop alongside the bar area which has a small range of essentials, food, few toys etc.
There is an indoor pool (again, we didn't use) and an outdoor pool that is closed out of season. Also an indoor play area - but it looked very small from outside.
My boy (3yo) liked the decent-sized outdoor play area and several other kids were using it too - but it could do with a good tidy & clean and more bark chippings putting down, had gone bare in places.
All OK, but just generally needs more attention to cleaning & maintenance.

There's a very small harbour just across the road from the entrance, but if you want decent sandy beaches then Woolacombe is your best bet - really long sandy beach there.
Right next to the lodge site is Watermouth Castle and it's theme park. A slightly eccentric collection of things to look at and do, but our kids (1 and 3) loved it - a handful of rides ideal for small kids, decent outside play area, maze to get lost in, and while some of the rides & attractions looked like they had been there for some time, the grounds themselves are well kept. Quite steep paths to get around though. Once you've paid to get in, so long as you pay a couple of quid for a photo pass at the cafe by the exit, you can return for something like £1 each again every day. We went back most afternoons so the kids could go on the rides etc on our way back from days out, as it's right next door.
Other attractions in the area:
The Big Sheep - quite entertaining, sheepdog trials, sheep shearing displays, sheep racing, indoor area with lambs, piglets, puppies etc to coo over, good indoor play area with big slides (plus some near vertical death slides for the brave too!) and food, plus some other rides & attractions outside, and a brewery I believe.
Funderzone - a really big indoor playcentre in Barnstaple that does food too, a good choice for rainy days with the kids.
Ilfracombe Aquarium - interesting but small !

Real shame, obviously invested a lot of money a few years ago and it hasn't been touched since. 'In door play area' a disgrace, filthy, holes in walls, most items broken. Lodges dirty and in need of maintenance and updating. Staff in the restaurant were excellent and friendly though. On the whole not what you expect for a £1000/week!

Stayed here for a long weekend in July 2011 and have to say very, very disappointed. Although the site itself seemed well kept and was in a lovely location the lodge accommodation was very poor. It was dirty (think many spiders, cobwebs, dead insects on the windowsills, dirty pots left over from previous occupants), old, tatty and dated (ripped cushions and pillow cases, an oven that didn't work properly etc.).
