A gem. We were met at the door by the owner holding an adorable, white lamb. She ushered us into the beautiful stone courtyard of her grandparents' home and enveloped us in the warmth and sweetness of her family. They are a 'slow food' establishment with the astonishing and delicious food that you hope for but rarely find. We had wild garlic, wild asparagus and wild artichokes foraged by Lucilla and the chef, the characterisitic red beef of the region, many local cheeses, innumerable delicious small appetizers and home-made aperitifs. We only stayed two nights and I wished we had spent days there.

This is worth the drive up windy roads and into the tiny cobbled streets of this medieval village where we were suddenly glad of our small rental car.

The welcome was friendly when you finally found the door, and Lucilla was happy to speak English (her mother speaks German as a second language) and let us know the history of the villa which has been in her family since her great-great grandmother. She has returned from Italy to Santu Lussurgiu with her boyfriend, the chef, to help her mother run this beautiful house as a hotel.

Our room wasn't in the main house but in the next lane behind it, and it was always interesting walking through the house and feeling the history, and seeing the wonderful ways each part was used. The bedroom was fitted with Art Deco furniture, and had a good en-suite. Be sure to take your own shampoo, conditioner, etc. - nothing supplied but soap. We didn't find air-conditioning and had the windows open somewhat, so insect repellent would have been a good idea.

Dinner was served in the courtyard under the lemon trees and consisted of a number of antipasti dishes including lovely quails egg on home-made bread with shredded truffle, then a beef prima, followed by a delicious desert. It wasn't served until after 9 pm and went on for a couple of hours so was an experience in itself, but one to be prepared for! We found it hard to stay awake but we didn't want to miss anything.

Church bells from all over the town woke us up for breakfast - which again was a feast. Everthing was home-made or sourced locally. The chef is obviously a baker at heart since the sweet cakes, bread, etc. were wonderful - and what a selection!

This is a rustic house with charming details so don't expect perfection in all things.
WiFi is available on the ground floor at a small premium.
Parking is near the church, or where ever it is possible to fit a car among such narrow streets.

Altogether a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of how life is, and was, lived in the interior of this lovely country.

The place is a love at first sight the moment you push in the strong wooden door front.
It is a magnificent retreat lost in the inner mountain hills of sardegne island. The family staff is extremely kind and friendly, rooms and common areas a nicely decorated with excellent choice of materials and the dinner is just a delicious experience to be imperatively experienced personally.

Our short stay in this marvellous village and in Antica Dimora del Gruccione, made one of the most romantic and stunning moment during our stay in Sardegne.

This is an amazing place to stay. The surroundings are beautiful and the rooms are nicely decorated. The highlight is the dinner which consists of many courses that just keep arriving, each one nicer than the last. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful.Couldn't recommend this place enough.

My husband and I stayed in Antica Dimora, last week and we must say it was a wonderful experience.
The hospitality of this family run hotel was second to none, they could not do enough for you and made you feel so welcome. The hotel is layed out in various old world town houses with beautiful courtyards and antique furniture. The bedrooms are bright, very clean, modern and well layed out with lovely ensuite bathrooms, our room even had a fireplace and lovely veranda overlooking the town. The location while difficult to negotiate with a car due all the narrow streets but was so central.
The highlight of our stay was dinner, we stayed on half board basis and the meal was fantastic. The seven course tasting menue was carefully selected from local producers it was as good, if not better than an Mitchelen Restaurant we have visited

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main part of the building

Wonderful memories are made at places like Antica Dimora del Gruccione. This is a B&B run by a creative, talented and extraordinary family who present to you the history and culture of Sardinia, handed down from their family. From the moment that Lucilla opened the enormous wooden doors of the property's luscious courtyard, fragrant with passion flowers, to the handmade breakfast pastries of silken Sardinian dough, every moment of our stay was magical. Lucilla (who speaks lovely English), her Mom (a philosophy/history scholar) and Roberto (Lucilla's boyfriend, who is a brilliant chef, and ever so charming), work to make your stay an experience that will enrich your life. Our descriptions of Roberto's 10 course dinner, invented that evening, from the most fresh, local ingredients have had our friends and family drooling. Among other things, we were introduced to Mirtu (a Sardinian liquor made from myrtle), and savored this sweetness on our way to sleep. Antica Dimora del Gruccione is a must stop for anyone who loves an authentic experience.

We very much enjoyed our stay in this family-run business here. The German speaking owner lady and her English speaking daughter made us feel very welcome. A very important part of the experience is their membership in and cooking according to the Slow Food movement. The food was always great. The Sardinia-typical Air Condition-only heating can be a bit annoying on colder days. The Easter procession during the evening and night was impressive.
