We just returned from a 5 day stay at the Killarney Mountain Lodge. We went to celebrate my parent's 50th wedding anniversary.
We chose the lodge as Killarney Provincial Park was our family's favourite camping spot for 40 some years. We love camping, but as my father's now in his 80s and my niece is a year old - the lodge offered us a great alternative. We could hike in the park and then come back to a wonderful meal and comfortable room.
The rooms and lodge are rustic and completely charming. We found the service to be terrific! We're planning to make this an annual trip!

I struggled to give this place an honest rating, because the resort itself is really average (or way below average, when it comes to the bathrooms) - but our experience there was absolutely fabulous, due to the guided outdoor adventures they offer.

We were there for 4 nights at the beginning of August, and as many people have pointed out, the accommodations are basic, to say the least. Simple rustic rooms (we stayed in one of the cabins), with basic furniture, and possibly the smallest bathroom I've ever seen. (in fact, the sink is in the room, outside the bathroom). And absolutely the smallest shower in the world (we are fortunately small people, but I can't imagine how a large person could even fit inside the shower). Plus, the bathroom badly needs repair and upgrade.

Meals in the restaurant are advertised as "home cooking" - and there's nothing fancy about them. They too, are basic, but good and filling. And the bar is very nice.

However, no one comes here for the food or rooms. They come for the adventures, which were outstanding. We took the "adventure vacation", with guided trips every day and evening - and it was incredible. Hiking to a pristine mountain lake in Killarney Park, sunset sailing in Georgian Bay, kayaking around the Fox Islands - each adventure led by wonderful young guides, and accompanied by fabulous lunches prepared on shore. This is summer camp for adults - and if you want to experience the best that Ontario wilderness has to offer, this is the way to do it. It's camping, with comfortable beds and someone else doing the cooking.

I agree with one of the previous reviews about the surroundings being beautiful. In addition, the girls and guys who work outside and at the bar were fine, helpful and friendly. That's about it for the positive points. The PRICE was absolutely RIDICULOUS for several reasons. Firstly, the bathroom was disgusting. It smelled like urine and looked like no work had been done for the past 20 years. Even a bit of paint would have helped! Next, the floors outside the bathroom were filthy (not swept). I have no problem with rustic but cleanliness should be a priority. The bed spreads looked like they hadn't been washed in a long time. In addition, the waitress was actually friendly the morning after our first dinner (after a generous tip). To follow, the food was mediocre, my steaks are much better at home ! I cannot believe they have a TRIP ADVISOR recommendation sticker for 2011. They must have gone downhill extremely quickly since then. Be careful before you book !!!

This must have been my 5th or 6th time back at Killarney Mountain Lodge, and surely will not be my last. The place is stunning. Don't be mistaken, it is not for those looking for a luxurious 5 star resort. There is no spa, no gourmet chef, no fancy hotel rooms or beds, etc. What you will find is nature and tranquility at its best. It feels like you are at the edge of the world, hovering between pure simplicity and world class luxury. My favorite part was sitting on a muskoka chair at the base of a rock while watching the million dollar yachts pass by. The food was fantastic, not gourmet, but just great home cooked meals. The rooms really are rustic, but in all honesty this is not the type of resort that is known for its rooms. There are plenty of activities to do if you like to be active, or you can lay by the pool and just relax. You should definitely check out Killarney Provincial Park, it is picturesque. Killarney Mountain Lodge is one of my favorite places in the world!

We had a 4 night visit to the lodge and had a wonderful time. It is quite rustic and very low key. The cabins and rooms are pretty basic, so if you want a luxurious stay this is probably not the place for you. But if you are looking for a wonderful spot, free from all the hustle and bustle of the city and really enjoy the outdoors, this is a great getaway. The village of Killarney is a little fishing village, but a major stop over for many sail boats and boaters. The hiking, sailing, kayaking and canoeing in the area are fabulous. Swimming in the clear lakes and Georgian bay is wonderful. We saw lots of wildlife, enjoyed outstanding views of Killarney, Georgian bay and the many lakes in the park. The food is fine, nothing fancy, but good. Lunches on the day trips were great.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with views of the water

The surroundings are really great. So the older rooms, the average meals and the neutral staff are not so important to have a good time. Summary: The price-performance-ratio is unfortunately not the best.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Return to an era of grace and simplicity..... Killarney Mountain Lodge is a casual resort nestled on the north shore of Georgian Bay. Family owned and operated for over 50 years, the lodge is famous for friendly ambience, a distinctive cuisine and a unique outdoor adventure programme. This comfortable oasis features a charming dining room; nostalgic cocktail lounge with live entertainment during July and August; heated swimming pool, sauna and tennis court. The red granite shores of the Bay and white quartzite hills and sparkling lakes of Killarney Provincial Park beckon the explorer. There are Unlimited opportunities for daily expeditions by canoe, kayak, sail and trail in Ontario's most spectacular scenic wilderness. Killarney Provincial Park has always been considered the Crown Jewel of Ontario Parks. It abounds with wildlife large and small, from squirrels and chipmunks to deer, moose, elk and black bear. As a wilderness park, all forms of resource extraction, motorized equipment and hunting are prohibited. Visitors to the park are therefore assured of peace and tranquility. When exploring the intriguing channels and mysterious islands of Georgian Bay by kayak or aboard the lodge's excursion vessels, stunning vistas are at every hand. Sightings of waterfowl, deer, moose and bear are common. During a restful sojourn at the lodge guests can enjoy a quiet poolside read or a relaxing dip in the solar heated swimming pool. When action is the order of the day local wilderness trails start right at the lodge doorstep. They offer easy access to the outback in just a few short steps. Birdwatchers will find a wide variety of birds on both the lodge property itself and along these nearby trails. A few years ago a highly respected, elderly birder sighted 76 varieties during the course of a spring weekend. Killarney has always been a focal point for anglers. The lodge motto is "big waters mean big fish". We have all the equipment and facilities for a successful fishing trip including guides, boats both large and small and rental tackle. Giant northern pike and muskellunge are favourites for anyone seeking these voracious predators. Northern Georgian Bay's least known rod and reel resource is the unbelievable abundance of small and largemouth bass. These fighting fish lurk in the deep, near-shore pools. Commonly they run to four and five pounds. In recent years down rigging for salmon and trout has become a major activity in the Killarney area and Killarney Mountain Lodge has vessels dedicated to this deepwater style of fishing. Just 4.5 Hours from Toronto via Highways 400, 69 and 637, the lodge is easily accessible. If you take this route to Killarney, a circle tour is available to return to southern Ontario via Manitoulin Island, across the Fitzwilliam Channel to Georgian Bay aboard the Chi-Cheemaun ferry, Tobermory and on to the Bruce Peninsula. This provides a rare opportunity to enjoy some of Ontario's less visited backcountry as well as an exciting trip across the wide expanse of Lake Huron. ... more   less
