Owner description: Tawhiti MuseumWidely acclaimed as one of the most innovative museums in New Zealand, Tawhiti uses life size exhibits and scale models to capture the past in a series of super-realistic displays. All the displays – including the life size figures created from moulds cast from real people – are designed and built on the premises. Whether the subject is shipping, farming, railways, or just a small corner of a colonial kitchen, the attention given to research and detail is the same. “I hope my enthusiasm for local history comes through the displays. I’m particularly aware of drawing children into our exhibits – they mustn’t feel museums are old buildings, full of old dusty junk. Historical display should be exciting and relevant – I’m always looking for more creative ways of making it just that” Nigel Ogle.

I am a local and hadn't visited in several years. Recently took my children and visitors from Auckland and we all thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It is well worth a visit - highly recommend

This place is awesome! An opportunity to learn about NZ's history! To see models so cleverly and accurately made! Incredibly realistic and fascinating models of buildings, animals & people, including scenes from Maori wars to everyday life in settler times. you need to set aside several hours to really take it all in.

It brought back many memories of places I lived in Taranaki
The pictures were excelent and so many from over a long period of time. Model trains and cars also helped bring back memories. They also had an excellent resturant which helped us enjoy our stay.

This attraction has been growing and every time we visit - more than ten times, there is always something new and exciting to see. The newest attraction of a underground river trip is very exciting. Has a lovely little cafe called Badgers - after the wind in the willows
