Wheatly Downs Farmstay
Reviewed November 12, 2011

We were very excited to stay on this farm, having heard that it offers encounters with farm animals, however, we ended up bitterly disappointed. Our room was so cold we had to sleep in our clothes and the owner didn't seem to get the reason why we paid the extra NZ$20 for the night at his farm (it cost us NZ$80, normally we wouldn't pay more than NZ60 for a double room). We didn't see a single farm animal, if you don't count a mouse that tried to get into our snack bag at night.
Not a farm stay; merely accommodation on a farm.

Wheatly Downs is recommended by The Lonely Planet and the BBH, but gives a totally wrong impression. It lies 8 km out of Hawera, and because if the LP&BBH people drive that extra few km. I wouldn't call it farmstay because the chance to see farm animals isn't as big as you thing. The animals are spread over the entire farm. When I was there (2 weeks) I saw a few pigs one time and 2 horses and that was it. The chickens and sheep were all on private property, so not that easy accessible. You can see a lot of cows if there grazing around the hostel but the property is very big so the animals are mostly spread over the land.
There is not much to do if you don't have a car because Hawera is an 1,5 hour walk, or you can hitchhike. But only on certain times, because the road on which WD lies is not that busy, so try in the morning or at 4 o clock when people get from work.
The lake of which is spoken in the BBH lies 26 km away from the hostel. One person tried to bike there, but after a view hours he got stuck on a road on which he could not cycle.
The showers don't have a lot of pressure so if you like nice and warm showers, don't expect nice pressurized water pouring down.
There is one heater in the hostel, which is chained to desk so people don't take it to there rooms, because it get VERY COLD. And by very cold I mean that i was sleeping with 2 duvets and one blanket to keep myself warm at night. When the owner finds that someone has turned the heater on, he will most of the time shut it of because he thinks it's too warm.
There is no wireless/WiFi. Internet cost 2 dollar per 15 minutes, but it also costs you 2 dollars to turn the computer on! So for your first 15 minutes you pay $4 and then $2 for every 15 minutes after that. Internet is also very slow, so you can't even get a lot done in those 15 minutes.
There is also no TV. Well there is a TV in the ensuite but you can't use that if you don't stay there. I found a miniature TV in a cupboard. It had an antenna that was broken of, which I tried to fix with straps. It was all black and white and the image would go snowy after 45 minutes.
There was a family staying in the ensuite while I was there. They were very disappointed because the ensuiteroom was covered by trees so there was no sunlight. The children wanted to play in garden but they could only play in the smaller garden because the big and nice one was on the owners private property (he lives next to the hostel). There was nothing there for the kids, no animals to play with, no lake to swim in, nothing! So they left after on night.
Also, the reception for your phone is very bad. Most of the time you are unavailable, and if your lucky enough to receive internet on your cell, it's the question if you'll get reception.

On the upside, the nature around the farm is very nice. And if you don't mind twisty roads up and downhill, then the walk from the hostel to Hawera is quite nice. If you're lucky you can see Mount Taranaki from the hostel, but only if not clouded, which it is most of the time (clouded that is).

If you like peace, quiet and a lot of green grass, then this is the place to go.
But if you
-don't own a car
-not that into nature
-not much of a walker
-can't handle silence
-like internet
-want a lot of warm sunshine (because of the mountain its always quite chilly, but towards Hawera it gets nice and warm on warm days)
-and you want to see lots of different farm animals
Then this really isn't the place for you.

Room Tip: IF you want to stay here and you like being warm, be prepared to put some money on the table. The do...
