We recently began and ended our first trip to Costa Rica with stays at the Casa Bella Rita B&B. The owners are a charming couple originally from Michigan and offered just the right blend of comfort being with folks from home, and encouragement with lots of great information about exploring Costa Rica. It was if they gave up roots and wings...offering a beautiful home with delicious food to us, but also making it so easy for us to go out and visit parts of Costa Rica where we had never been. For the last night of our stay, we thoroughly enjoyed the Canopy Room, top-rate in every way. Rita and Steve also have two little rescue dogs who are absolutely sweet ~ docile and loving. We just loved our time there and will keep those memories close in our hearts.

We stayed at Casa Bella Rita (CBR) for 2 nights when we first arrived in Costa Rica, for 1 night between our trips to Arenal/Monteverde and the OSA Peninsula, and 1 night before returning to cold and snowy Canada. I first met Rita Devore on line, when I began planning our 2 week trip Christmas vacation to Costa Rica in August ’08. Soon after our initial contact, Rita called us in Nova Scotia and helped plan and book our entire vacation. If you stay at CBR, you will quickly discover why this B&B is rated #1 in Costa Rica and why I call this B&B “a home away from home”. The rooms are all tastefully decorated, comfortable, clean and air-conditioned, the service is incredible, the pool on the balcony and the view of the canyon is amazing, Steve cooks yummy breakfasts, and Rita is the best travel agent you’ll ever find! She and Steve even visited and stayed at one of the B&B’s we wanted to stay at, because she wanted to make sure the place would be okay for us. We were supposed to arrive on December 21, but due to snow and ice storms, we were unable to arrive until Christmas Day. When I called Rita and informed her of our problem, she personally took care of everything. She called all the other B&B’s we had planned to stay at, rebooked for us, and even changed our Sansa Air reservations to and from Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula. Rita is worth her weight in GOLD! Arriving on Christmas afternoon, Steve was right at the airport to pick us. After a short drive to Santa Ana, outside of San Jose, we were greeted by Rita with cool drinks and an invitation to have Christmas night dinner with them and some of their friends. We were made to feel right at home and soon felt like we were visiting friends, rather than clients. Rita arranged for a guide/driver (Luis), who speaks English well, to take us on a day trip to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, drove us to Arenal, picked us up in Monteverde and took us to visit a Costa Rican beekeeper (Jerry is a beekeeper and has been involved in a queen breeding research project since the ’80), and then back to CBR before flying to the Osa Peninsula. Luis was the best guide we could have imagined during the 3 days we traveled in his air-conditioned van. He was able to act as an interpreter, took as to several “Sodas” (where locals eat), answered all our questions about plants, local customs and culture, and stopped whenever we wanted to take pictures or look at something of interest. Our stay at Casa Bella Rita was more than we ever could have imagined and we hated to leave. CBR is “PURA VIDA”, the good life, as the say in Costa Rica!

January is the high season in Costa Rica, and the travel books that I read suggested booking hotels in advance. Well, for one reason or another, we booked our flight to Costa Rica less than 2 weeks in advance, and I was scrambling to find a base hotel in San Jose. I scoured through the books and TripAdvisor, and I found this hotel with all positive reviews. Reading that there was not much to do in downtown San Jose, I took a chance and wrote to the hotel directly for a reservation. I received a very prompt response from Rita, who advised that there was a room available for the requested nights. We stayed in the hotel for 3 separate nights, and all three times that we were there, Rita and Steve made us feel at home.

First, when you book your stay here, Rita will direct you on where to meet Steve when you arrive at the airport. This takes all the stress out on your transportation. Second, when I booked this hotel, I had not figured out our itinerary for the rest of our vacation, but I knew that we wanted to be in Arenal, Monteverde, and Montezuma. Rita helped and arranged all our transportation between these cities, and once again took out the stress of having to arrange this on our own. She did all these BEFORE we left the US. How fantastic is that?

Rita even helped us in booking our hotel in Arenal and saved us 10% on the hotel bill in Arenal.

Steve met us at the airport (our plane did not get there on time, but Steve was still waiting for us), and when we got to the hotel, we knew that we made the right choice. Our room was beautiful, clean and airy. There was lots of sunshine, and it was tranquil. There is a pool and a balcony which overlooks the canyon. Steve and Rita made our stay as nice as it could be along with Topo and Rata, their two dogs. I mentioned to both of them that I drink tons of water, and while my husband and I went out to dinner, Steve went to a near by supermarket and picked up 2 large bottles of water for us to take with us. That is what I call attention to detail.

There are a couple of good local restaurants near the hotel. Rita and Steve can advise on what you can order at these places. These restaurants take dollars($20 is the largest denomination that these places take), so you don't have to worry about not carrying colones. On our last night, Steve made an awesome Thai hot and sour soup and Indian dish for dinner.

On our last night, I mentioned to Rita that I would need to get a massage when I got back to the States, and she said that she could arrange for a masseuse to come to the hotel. This was a last minute thing, but the masseuse came to the hotel, because they knew Rita pretty well. I had the most amazing massage (the price was 1/3 less than what I would have paid in the States), all because of Rita's attention to our needs.

This really is a peaceful place where you can get away from it all, and Rita and Steve made our stay memorable.

Word would not do the service, accomodations, and feeling experienced from Casa Bella Rita!!!

Truly there is no review that could do this B&B justice as it would out do any expectations.

Rita and Steve are AMAZING, they go so far off the customer service radar level that it can not be counted.

You can ask them for anything!!! They even book inter Costa Rica flights and hotels for a last minute trip or day excursions.

YOU CAN MAKE THIS YOUR BASE HOTEL - THEN EXPLORE COSTA RICE FROM HERE.

The awesome views and the are (hiking and views of the canyon are breath taking).

They are a very short walk to the main bus line that can take you just about anywhere.

Make this your ONE and ONLY place to stay otherwise nothing else will ever meet the standards!!!

Thank you Steve and Rita!!! SAY HI to Rata and Tobo... I miss Rata!!!

I was recommended by my Costa Rican friend to visit Casa Bella Rita Boutique Bed & Breakfast. The view is fantastic. It is a beautiful wonder land. Not to far away from San Jose. Vicky is very friendly to show us the hotel. Next visit I will definitely to enjoy this peaceful B& B. No wonder it is a #1 B& B in San Jose.

After reading all the great reviews on this website, this was the obvious choice (even though for a brief moment we'd considered staying at the Marriott---thank goodness we didn't). Steve was at the airport when we arrived; he loaded our bags into his car and off we went. The B&B is a little out of town and overlooks a canyon. There are no other houses nearby or in view, and looking out across the canyon is so quiet and beautiful. We had nothing to eat on our flight and we arrived in Costa Rica a little hungry. Steve was really kind to offer to make us something to eat, and within minutes, he'd whipped up these incredibly delicious burritoes for us! On the spur of the moment, we decided a massage would be nice to get before we had to leave the next morning. So Rita made a phone call and set up for us to have a couples massage that same evening at Casa Bella Rita. She arranged for our massages to be in the upstairs living room/lounge area where there is a wall of high windows looking out towards the canyon. The sun was just setting and it was gorgeous. We both enjoyed our hour-long massage which was just a total of $80 for the two of us! That night we walked to a nearby restaurant that had great Costa Rican fare. Afterwards, back at CBR we visited with a few of the other guests, and used the computer that is Wi-Fi and free to guests--that was a big plus!

Rita also arranged for a driver (Luis) to drive us to the coast. We needed to get there the following day to start our week-long Windstar cruise. Luis was fantastic and he spoke very good English---he had lived in the States for many years previously but was born and raised in Costa Rica. We really liked Luis; he was so responsible and he was a good driver who shared many stories and information about local customs, places to see, etc. We will definitely hire Luis again when we go back there!

It was too bad we had to leave Casa Bella Rita after just 1 nt. Next time we'll plan to make that our base while we explore some other areas of the country around San Jose. Before we left in the morning, Steve cooked an awesome breakfast---pretty much whatever we requested, he would do.

Steve & Rita are wonderful hosts--they are relaxed and down to earth, yet willing to go the extra mile to make their guests comfortable. Casa Bella Rita is definitely a place we'd like to return some day!
