“The best part of our Costa Rican vacation”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

My aunt and I were lucky enough to come across this wonderful place when our original destination hotel had water problems. It was one of the most relaxing and fun places I have ever stayed. My room, number 4, had a high ceiling, beautiful wood floors, a wonderful slate shower with plenty of hot water. My vanity area had a huge window in the ceiling letting in natural light, and a view of the beautiful tropical trees surrounding the place. I also had a wonderful glass wall across from my bed, that i opened up in the morning to views of the forest and birds. I had two cozy chairs, great for reading, a frig, large flatscreen, and nice desk. The king size bed was so comfy and air conditioning worked wonderful. We had a very hardy breakfast every morning in the courtyard, including fruit, juices, coffee, eggs and the Costa Rica norm, rice and beans. We had dinner there 3 of our 5 nights and the menu is extensive and the food super, especially the spring rolls! The owner and his three childen made us feel like we were family and the staff were all so sweet. Blass, our morning waiter was especially great! The gardens are amazing. Take time to walk through them, and the main house slowly so you won't miss all the interesting things there is to see. Corteza Amarilla and its people will forever be in my heart.

Room Tip: room number 4 had a nice big window looking out to forest. room number 6 had big enough shower to da...

Our first and last nights were spent in this extraordinary, quirky and delightful hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful and the meals were very good. We had an extremely spacious room with a bathroom like no other we have every seen! Loved shaving with a view of the trees outside through the sloping window above the mirror. Of all the other places we stayed, this was the most comfortable bed ever. Loved the seating areas in the garden dotted around and couldn't believe it was so close to a busy city. Our only negative comment was that although there was a coffee maker in the room, there was no coffee or cups. What - no coffee in Costa Rica?!!

We stayed at Corteza Amarilla Lodge on the 1st night of our vacation. The lodge is very quiet as it is small. The art work is very creative and whimsical, fun to look at! There are many areas throughout the grounds to sit and relax. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Rooms:
We were in room 11, being in a building with only one other room. It was very quiet both inside and out. The room was very large, having 2 beds, fridge, tv, and a sitting area. There is also a small closet. The bathroom is quite large, the shower having great water pressure and plenty of hot water. The beds were comfortable. Very CLEAN! It would have been nice to have a safe in the room along with an information book/folder.

Food:
Was really good and the service was excellent! Our waiter was very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was good, being the traditional Costa Rican, rice and beans, fruit, and eggs. Coffee was GREAT!

We enjoyed our stay at the Corteza Amarilla Lodge!

Loved staying here! Everywhere you look there is something wonderful to see. We stayed room #1 which had a nice comfortable seating area, though a little dark, to read. Bathroom was gigantic and very clean. Even had a few television stations from Miami in English. Only negative, was the room was near the road and construction was going on which started early in the morning. A little noisy. We had several dinners here and they all were very good. Breakfast was exceptional.

Room Tip: Room #1 was large but near the road, noisy in the evening 5-8 and morning 6-11.

Our first impression of this hotel was that it was beautifully decorated, well integrated with nature, and reminded us of a Costa Rican Pier 1. Raphael greeted us at the reception desk and was quite friendly and warm. However, there were little things that could have been improved upon. The locks didn't seem secure, since they were push-button locks. As previously mentioned in a review, there was no safe. The shower drain was on the sluggish side but the water pressure was good. After a week of excellent hotel breakfasts, this was the most disappointing one. It was sparse and didn't account for a vegetarian diet. However, we have to give credit for the wheelchair accessible bathroom in a country that doesn't seem all-around wheelchair-accessible!

We spent our first night in Costa Rica at this funky, creatively decorated little property. An artist lives here, or at least comes in to decorate - small tables with glass beads, mosaics, whales painted on the ceiling, found object sculptures, there are pleasantly surprising vignettes around every corner. Breakfast was traditionally Costa Rican and hearty, the room was clean and comfortable. The only problem we had was after going out in the evening, the cab driver taking us back (who didn't speak a word of English) didn't know where the Lodge was - take the address or a little map with you if you go out. We solved it by giving him their phone number and he spoke with someone at the desk. Neat little spot.

We stayed here on our final night in Costa Rica. We chose it as it looked somewhat different and it was close to the airport. We spent a pleasant afternoon/evening sitting in the restaurant reading, drinking tea, beer and eating. Very attentive staff behind the desk and in the restaurant. Restaurant a touch overpriced IMO. The decor of the hotel is very interesting. Unfortunately we had to be up at 3am for our flight. Reception were punctual as ever with the morning call and our transportation was 5 minutes early - as it always was in Costa Rica!
