The Aloft of San Jose felt new and had all the amenities you would expect from a business hotel. The concept is a bit of a mix between a luxury hotel and a budget one. The amenities seem to all be there that I expected, but had some features similar to America's Best Value Inn, in that there was self service food available 24 hours a day. We used the fitness room which roomy and very well equipped with modern, working treadmills, cycles, elliptical, nautilus, and free weights.

This hotel is relatively new I think. Or at least it appeared that way. It is really very centrally located near the Escazu and other nightlife and shopping districts but far away from the more dangerous parts of the San Jose Costa Rica. The hotel is very clean including the rooms which are nice and upgraded. All of them I think. I have stayed here three times over the course of time and I don't think I found a bad room yet. Wifi is quick and works most of the time. It is complimentary. The breakfast is great and is also complimentary. I recommend this over other more expensive options in Costa Rica when you need to stay anywhere near the San Jose or Escazu area!

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are good in this hotel but ones toward the back of the hotel have better views...

The Staff were very friendly. The room was clean and very comfortable. The breakfast was good for people on a gluten-free diet. I'm always looking for a place where I can have gluten-free breakfast. And that was it.

Place is clean (not obvious in Costa Rica!).
Personal is resourceful and helpful.
Location is OK: close to the airport, 20 minutes from downtown San Jose. Not so much to do in the area of the hotel.
Security around the hotel is impressive.

had an enjoyable experience with aloft. love the vibrant colours that aloft uses, the bed was really comfortable, the surroundings are quiet. i love the bliss toiletries they use but do not like that they use dispensers for shampoo and shower gel, which means you can't take them with you if you like them. breakfast selection wasn't fantastic but the food quality was all right.

the hotel is located right beside a mcdonald's that's open 24 hours, and also walking distance to lots of food options and a supermarket. cannot complain!

what i really do not like about aloft is that they have loud and awful music in the evenings. that's probably the only thing that ruined my stay.

helpful tip: if you have time when you're leaving for the airport, flag a cab off the road instead of use the hotel's. the hotel's charge usd25, and if you flag one off the road, you could save some money if it goes by meter.

I suppose my expectations might have been too high for this property to begin with...

Stayed one night before flight back to US at this hotel. Hotel was clean and check-in relatively simple. Front desk staff was overall helpful. The hotel has a definite "W" hotel vibe to it but on a miniature scale. I definitely liked the lobby and bar area - very chic- with lounges and music (and possibly fragrances) being pumped throughout to enrapture all of their guests' senses. There was a single pool table near the bar. There was a small 24 hour marked right off the main check in area which was nice to grab some things if you needed them. Coffee was free but not very good with powdered creamer. However, the selection was mostly processed and frozen items and did not look very appealing nor very well attended to.

Although a SPG elite member, we were told that their hotel only has one type of room and upgrades were not possible. However, we got an "accessible" room which was supposedly larger. Although it probably was, I usually do not go for these rooms because the layout can be atypical including the shower which is usually just one large room - which ours was. This lack of loyalty to their SPG elites seemed a bit odd to me.

Unfortunately, my positive comments end here.

The room was very simple in an "artsy" format with colored walls and carpeting. The view was of a busy road and nothing special. The bed reminded me of a mattress one would find at a 1 or 2 star competitor - very uncomfortable. I doubt this is the bedding package that is touted about in their adverts. The room service closed right around the time I was getting hungry so this was a let down as well. The wireless interned was available but pretty slow.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), our flight was too early to take advantage of the breakfast included in our rate. The front desk generously offered a "bagged" breakfast which is often a gamble but I would think usually would include a breakfast pastry/muffin, fruit or cereal. A picture is included in this review - what a disappointment! The bagged breakfast included a salami or other meat type sandwich, old lettuce on top of soggy bread with cheese, a bag of cocoa puffs equivalent and some non-refrigerated milk and an apple. Although I appreciate the gesture, this was a horrible meal and ended up being mostly discarded. I actually believe I became ill from it after we arrived back home but cannot be sure.

Although the price was very reasonable for a modern, hip, new hotel in a great part of San Jose, due to the room as well as mattress we probably won't stay here again during our next stay. Maybe we will just come to use the bar/lounge area during our next visit but not to stay.

Thank you ever so much for your review and for allowing us to constantly improve our services and implement suggestions towards the Aloft barnd as part of Starwoods selected service portfolio. As well as our 24 hr re:fuel we do provide room service from 6am to 11pm with a vast variety of items. Regarding your dissaponitment with some oy your F&B experiences we have been working on this area and for 5 months now have our NEW Backyard Lounge & Restaurant which was an inovation to the aloft brand in the americas, being able to provide a better gastronomic experience. All your comments will be taken into consideraton and we will be working towards improving these issues. Unfortunately our hotel does not provide with any distinguished type of rooms and hence we cannot provide with upgrades. We do hope to be able to convert this negative experience as an elite member to our chain and to be able to have you with us again when visiting San Jose.
