Hotel Luisiana
Ranked #4 of 8 Hotels in Santa Ana
Reviewed November 9, 2010

I went online prepared to write a fantastic review about this hotel when I read the Mgr's response to another member's post re: hidden charges. I didn't know about this and certainly was not told upon check in/out. This is something I'll have to dispute with my credit card company when I get the bill. I hope Hotel Luisiana has some proof that I agreed to the extra surcharge - however minor. Although I commend their efforts for being eco-friendly, I believe it should be the consumer's choice, not have it forcibly taken from one's wallet. It's almost like stealing. Scary, considering we really like the hotel and had wonderful and restful night.

BTW - we stayed at FOUR different hotels in Costa Rica and this was the ONLY hotel that asked for a security deposit. Our friend gave cash, but we used our credit card. Uh-oh. Also, the entire country is very eco-friendly, so I don't know why this is the only hotel that charges a fee???

The rooms (ours and our friend's room) were both very clean, although the tiles in the bathroom needed some cleaning and/or small facelift. We were assigned a huge room with a king sized bed, a second bedroom with a bunkbed and a kitchen with fridge and microwave. This was a nice surprise. As were the free international LD calls.

We did not eat at the hotel, so cannot comment on the food. There is a strip of nice Americanized restaurants/shops near the hotel and we choosed to buy our dinner there instead.

Location: not close to the airport and was difficult to find. We had to ask for directions many times and finally gave up and asked directions to "Santa Ana" only. As we came close to the "vicinity" of the hotel-Santa Ana, we called and got more specific directions. Costa Ricans identify with landmarks as opposed to actual street names.

Prior to finding out about the hidden charges, I would have recommended this hotel. Not so sure now.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Luisiana 10/16 - 10/20 this year. It was a perfect location for our needs, i.e. exploring Santa Ana as a possible retirement community. The service was attentive, unobtrusive and very friendly. The room we had was large and airy and featured all the items that you would want on vacation. The only item missing from an American view was a box of facial tissue. However, that was a small item we addressed after a trip to one of the local supermarkets. I would suggest that you work out any tours you might wish with the hotel staff. Tours, trips and transfers were quite reasonable, on time and enjoyable.
Work with Arturo Hernandez Martinez and Carolina Morales for all hotel matters. They are great people and made the trip. They removed any questions or concerns and took good care of us.
For any tours, trips into San Jose or airport rides, ask for Yuri Paz to be your driver. He is good company and wealth of knowledge.
If you want a Boutique Hotel with excellent service in the San Jose area, book with Hotel Luisiana.

The room was very clean, comfortable and the bed allowed a good nights sleep. However the location was not as near as thought from the airport. The staff, altough helpful, added a few extra costs on such as a check out charge and also a room deposit, which you get charged for if your bank currency is not dollars. The cost of a taxi to the airport is a not inconsiderable $20 given what this adds to the price of a room compared to the hotels closer to the airport. The room was spotless though and the shower amazing so if you are staying for a couple of nights and want to explore the central valley / pacific side it would be a good location.

dear client , thank you for write your point of few about hotel Luisiana.
We frozen 200$ for deposit , when you check out we charge only 1 $ ( not colones) because of 2 reasons.
the first one is due to the fact that our small contribute to save the world , because hotel Luisiana use only ecological en biodegradable soap for wash everything, sheets, floor, bathrooms .
The second one is that the bank system in Costa Rica does not permit to liberated the 200$ deposit in a short time ( sometimes needs 2 months) while with 1 $ check out , the bank system of Costa Rica ( not our system) works good and the 200$ IS LIBERATED (free) after the transaction , and if you need to use your card for rent a car o for something else , you don't have problem.
Hotel Luisiana is located in the suburb San Jose town , a huge and very relaxing zone , the perfect way to start and finish your vacation near the airport !!!

We picked this hotel because of its good reviews, price and convenience to Dentavac. Our stay was very pleasant. Our room was spotless, comfortable and had great amenities - really exceptional for the price. A nice touch is the complimentary coffee con leche available in your room each morning by just calling the front desk. It was pleasant to use wifi (which was good, but took a little while to get connected at first) or watch a bit of television as we got ready while having coffee in the room for the price of a small tip.

The hotel offers many services including setting up tours and transportation. It also has a restaurant. As we were on a budget and familiar with the area, we did not use these, but could see them as being convenient for some. We did encounter some older guests who were taking /using these services and seemed very pleased. The hotel offers a shuttle service at the same price as a taxi which is convenient in the rain or if you have any trouble with mobility.

The Hotel Luisiana is actually very convenient by bus we discovered. One bus (look for "Montoya" on the front sign of the Santa Ana blue colored buses) passes directly in front of the hotel but is a little infrequent. The "Calleviejo" bus runs directly from the bus stop at the bottom of the hill through the town of Santa Ana, past Dentavac, and on toward downtown San Jose.

Either by foot or by bus, you are close to several places to eat, pharmacies and markets. I'd suggest printing a small map and sticking it in a pocket with a few things that may be convenient for you. Your easy landmark to remember that anyone can direct you to is the giant Red Cross - Cruz Roja - that is down the hill and around the corner from the hotel. The Santa Ana Plaza and a small police station are right there as well in case you are coming from a direction by bus that is not in the sight line of the 10 foot red cross.

Overall, we plan to stay there again and would definitely suggest it to anyone visiting the area. If you have some time, be sure to walk around the small grid of streets in the Santa Ana village. You can pick up some things to eat and drink at a lower cost than at the Plaza near the hotel.

From Yuri the driver to Arturo the front desk manager to his staff members Esteban, Carolina, Randall and on to the chef whose name we did not get and still on to the housekeeping staff they are all spectacular at what they do. If you can find better staff in any hotel anywhere, buy the hotel and keep the staff!!

The hotel van was waiting for us when our plane arrived as requested. The room was immaculate every day. We had meals from the restaurant 3 times and each was 5-star including the absolute best Bolognese sauce either of us has ever eaten. Randall & Esteban were able to arrange a rental car that was delivered to the hotel at about 1/2 of what we were quoted from another agency. When we had to cut our trip short there was a minor "hiccup" with our rental car return, receipt and refund of deposit. Not only did the front desk staff ( Esteban & Carolina ) make multiple phone calls on our behalf which resulted in an expedited favorable result, but Carolina even translated via e-mail a rental document written in Spanish which had been e-mailed to us after we had left the country! You can't beat service like that!

I recently stayed 8 nights at Hotel Luisiana while having some dental work done at DentaVac in nearby Escazu and I would highly recommend both. The hotel was spotless and my suite was spacious and very comfortable. Staff is very helpful and grateful for your business. A short 10 minute walk brings you to a small tidy grocery store and a couple of restaurant choices. Downtown Santa Ana is either a further 15 minute walk or a bus ride with the stop directly across from the Red Cross and grocery store. In all, a very pleasant experience.

Hotel was clean and nice .Front desk employees were very polite and serviceable . The staff also showed concern for the guests. A driver was available for trips from hotel. If you wanted to know about a place in town the staff would get information for you. This is a great place for people who don’t speak Spanish and have never been to Costa Rica.
The hotel is in a residential area. There are a few restaurants nearby and a few small shops. They are within walking distance.
The hotel is very small with only 15 rooms. The smallness allows the staff to give individual attention to guess. The rooms are comfortable . The bathroom is built in tile and is roomy. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone who is concern about being somewhere that they have never been. I suggest a gift shop at the lobby.Other than that a great place. Congrats.......
