My wife and I spent three nights with the Matsuos at their mishuku. We wanted to get to the tip of Hokkaido, away from cities, and do some walking and birding. Couldn't have found a better spot: right on the boundary of a sanctuary run by the Wild Bird Society of Japan, and Mr. Matsuo is an avid birder and guide (wonderful library!) with very good English. He gave us advice for where to go and what to look for. Since we traveled up by train, he met us at Nemuro station and dropped us there at the end. He and his wife even arranged for us to get tickets on a birding cruise from a local harbor: puffins, guillemots, and auklets galore.
The minshuku is not close to any restaurant, but the breakfasts and dinner at the minshuku are superb: local seafood, greens, etc., and one can request a lunch for the following day. Great place for outdoor enthusiasts to stay.
