I was surprised to see such a nice visitor centre on such a small island. If you didn't come prepared with your own agenda, I would recommend stopping by to ask for help. This island is a 30 minute ferry ride from Ishigaki and there are no garbages on the island. So keep that in mind when deciding what to bring or when buying drinks at the local vending machines. I would recommend renting a bike to visit the majority of the island and if the visitor centre is open, they will be able to help you figure all these things out if you are unsure. Remember that you are in Japan and while the people will do their best, it is your responsibility to have some communicating skills in the local language at the very least to show the inhabitants respect.
