We visited Zamami for three days in April towards the end of our stay in Japan. We were greeted off the boat by a representative of Joy Joy who took us the short drive to the apartments. The complex itself comprises a main building with a reception and dining area, and two apartment blocks each with a few rooms and a sun terrace.
The facilities are quite basic, but everything you need is available. There is a kitchen area, shower rooms and a laundry machine (that uses some unusual, but surprisingly effective methods to wash your clothes!). The rooms themselves are of a traditional Japanese style in the sense that they are an empty floor space with a futon that folds out for sleeping.
Traditional Japanese breakfast is included (Miso soup, rice, cooked fish and pickles), and I have to say that it is some of the nicest that I ate during my time in Japan!
The thing that makes our time in Joy Joy so memorable for me was the staff, particularly the hostess, Nobu. She is one of the friendliest women I have ever met and made us feel unbelievably welcome. She always catered to our needs, and even surprised us one day with some homemade cake! Regretfully we left on her day off and never got a chance to say goodbye, but as we were setting off on the boat we could see that she had come to the harbour to wave us off. This kind-heartedness is what made our stay in Zamami one of the highlights of our visit to Japan.
If you are after a buzzing nightlife, then Zamami probably isn’t for you. If you are after 5-star accommodation, then Joy Joy probably isn’t for you either.
However if you are looking for a peaceful, beatutiful, friendly and relaxed place to visit, then this is definitely the place for you!
