The Maedakeso is a family run inn with wonderful proprietors. Even though they didn't speak English and my daughter's Japanese was limited, they went out of their way to make us feel welcome, including calling someone who could speak English to talk to us on the phone about the best places to hike on Yakushima Island. If you are looking for an American style hotel--this won't be the place for you--but if you want a homey, authentic stay, then this is it! The food is fantastic--all real Japanese food, like octopus, natto, sushi, pickles, grilled fish and miso. The layout is simple--you walk into the dining room, then there is a long hall with the guest rooms along one side. The rooms have tatami mats; the only furniture is a low table, since you sit on the soft floor. Futons are folded up in a corner, you pull them out yourself at night. There is a row of sinks that everyone shares, then a huge stone bath that has alternating male and female hours in the evening during the weekend. When there are few guests, you can use the individual baths. The proprietor was evidently very funny and entertaining because he was talk to the guests during dinner, making them laugh uproariously. After dinner they would continue talking and singing until about 9:30 pm. Although we couldn't understand what was going on, the atmosphere was great and they included us by pouring us sake and bringing out samples of special fruits and vegetables they grow themselves--like dragonfruit and guava. You can hear the happy sounds from the dining room from your tatami room, but the place was completely quiet from 10 pm to 6:30 am when people start getting up for the day. Yakushima is such an awesome place and the Maedakeso made it even more special. Note--the pillows, like all traditiona-style pillows in Japan are like rocks. Bring a neck pillow to help sleep on the plane, then use it on top of the "rock" to get a good night's sleep! You'll need to rent a car to stay here--I thought driving on the left side of the road would be hard, but you get used to it right away.
