Imagine a hot bath in the woods, next to a stream tumbling down a hillside, the trees are in full autumn colour, pinks, reds and golds in the late afternoon sun ... and it starts to gently snow. A true zen moment. And the tensions from hours of driving on the very narrow winding mountain roads just melt away. We felt this place a bit stiff at first but it ended up being one of our favourites on a two-week Kyushu trip. Get there by mid afternoon in fall/winter to fully enjoy the view from the onsen and by all means go to the outside bath on the next morning as well. By comparison, the baths inside are quite ordinary.
The food was very good, particularly the fish and beef. The manager assigned us an English-speaker to help us settle in and to explain the wonderful dinner menu. The rooms are large and very clean, with two separate seating areas AND a coffee maker, though our room (Room 207, I think), didn't have any view of the foliage.
