Definitely go to Kurokawa. It's well worth the trip and the rotenburo are stellar. Skip yufuin unless you love places like atami (japanese hot spring version of surfers paradise).

Kurokawa is not easy to get there.
Untouched nature and hot spring are so nice.
But kurokawa is not only such.
The place where Kurokawa may differ from other hot spring resorts is ....
Size good for walking.
Not too big,not too small.
Kurokawa hot spring town is emotional.
Everyone can buy "Yumeguri Tegata" which is about 1000yen.
If we use "Yumeguri Tegata",we can enjoy 4 hot spring which we are not staying.

Beautiful setting. Best visited by staying overnight in a local onsen ryokan. Small. Good for a couple of hours wander.

Kurokawa Onsen which is a town dedicated to rotemburo (outside Japanese baths in a natural setting - stone baths surrounded by natural foliage or next to a small creek). The baths are heated by the natural volcanic hotsprings.

This town was just beautiful. I thought I might be bored as the only activity I could find for Kurokawa was bathing in the Onsens (hot springs). I actually found the onsens to be more enjoyable than I anticipated but also the town is just so pretty. It is difficult to get to (reccommend a hire car) but that just stops it from being too crowded. There are some lovely shops as well as a wonderful bakery, restaurants & bars. Unlike most tourist towns in Japan Kurokawa has retaing all it's grace and charm from bygone years.
