We booked Ryokan Sanga because it's a little bit away from Kurokawa town center. Still easily access to Kurokawa town because Sanga offers free shuttle bus services.

We arrived Kurokawa town by bus and Sanga driver picked us up from the bus stop.
Host guided us to our room (standard Asebi room) and brought us some green tea with mochi.
Spacious room with a private toilet. We loved the seating area facing the river side. Birds singing and river sound didn't disturbed us at all. Our Host reserved a private onsen for us, in total they have 3 private onsens. You need to pick up a key at receptions to access the private onsens. They also offer in-room massage 40 min. around Yen 4000.

A delicate 14-course Kaiseki dinner, served in-room with our personal Host. Gorgeous presentations, like a painting. Plum wine from the house was delicious. We wanted to order an extra glass, but this wasn't listed at their menu. Our Host was so lovely and treated us an extra glass! After a superb dinner our Host made up our futons.

A little bit dissapointed, we spotted a lot of ants on the tatami in our room.
We called reception and they solved it with some spray while we had our shower in the private onsen.

The next morning we enjoyed our Kaiseki breakfast in the restaurant a lot.
When we got back in our room we were amazed that our futons were cleared up.

In our opinion, Sanga is really valuable for the money. We paid Yen 32.400 for 1 night including a delicate Kaiseki dinner -and breakfast with top class service!
It was a wonderful experience. Ryokan Sanga & Kurokawa town was really a highlight during our trip in Japan.

Room Tip: We booked a standard room and not a room with private bath. As they offer private onsen use anyway.

Sanga Ryokan was as romantic as the pictures depicted it to be. It is a traditional ryokan with several onsens which guests can bath in, situated by a river. We tried several, including the private "family" onsen which overlooks the forest. There is also a very quaint food bath where one can sit and relax. The ryokan building(s) is surrounded by a lovely garden that guests can wander around after a nice and relaxing dip in the onsen.

Our room was nice, spacious and traditional and meals served in the dining area were simple and delicious.

However, what really left a lasting impression on us was the excellent extra-mile customer service extended to us during our stay. We were scheduled to be picked up and delivered to the bus stop to catch our bus for our onward journey the next morning. After waiting for a while, it seemed that transport was running late. Not once did any of the staff expressed frustration or panic. They were reassuring and calm, and one of them drove us in her private car to the 2nd/3rd stop to catch up with our bus (which had since left) This female staff waited with us until we boarded the bus.

This ryokan is highly recommended because of our wonderful experience with the facilities and staff.

Pros: this is an incredibly romantic ryokan, the food is exceptional, service is friendly and the hot springs were - for us - very very relaxing. The ryokan is right by the river, we had a room with a hot spring in the room. It was more like an apartment, spacious and very simple/elegant, it is all in traditional japanese style. The ryokan is outside of the town which gives it a nice secluded feel. They also drive you in and out of town but we actually enjoyed the walk by the river and through the back alleys so didn't use this service much. We spent one lunch just sitting by the river eating a take away box from a restaurant in town, it was simple and lovely.
Cons: this is a small and single minded town, in the sense that you are here for hot springs and not much else, if you are looking for varied entertainment this is not the place to go. The ryokan is expensive, (but not disproportionately to other good hotels in Japan). Getting to Kurokawa onsen and the ryokan can be tricky, it is worth going through a travel agent beforehand to arrange your bus and pick up by the ryokan driver.

NB You sleep on traditional roll up mattresses on the tatami mats, if you are not used to this and have issues with hard sleeping surfaces this might not be for you

We were two families with small children who stayed here (4 adults and 4 children - 6 and under). As everyone has mentioned, this place is exquisitely located. The female outdoor onsen is truly a special place. The food was outstanding. The decor is gorgeous. You will love your visit.
I would not say that this place is particularly child friendly, but there are very few places in Japan that are and that probably makes it better. I noticed that almost all of the guests seem to be foreigners, either from Europe or other parts of Asia, so although the staff didn't speak great English they seem to be used to foreign ways and were not visibly fazed by our child chaos. The one negative is that the weather was quite chilly (and raining) while we were visiting and the heating unit in the room is the "blown heat" unit that sits on the wall. The bathroom is also tiny and there was no separate shower in our room. I would love to come back to this place (without young children) but would opt for a summer time trip.

A bit outside the village centre, hidden between the trees and situated next to the river. A page to a Japanese fairy tale. Parked down the car and a staff welcomes you in helping out with the luggage and guides you to the reception. Kaiseki dinner was served private in your room by a personal host and she also makes up your bed after dinner and clear it after breakfast. Breakfast is served in restaurant. Stayed in a standard room "asebi" with private toilet and wash basin but without bathroom - you can take a shower in the inside onsen or the reception can give you a key to one of the private baths to take a shower. Soap and shampoo are available for use. Ryokan has multiple onsen baths, not extreme large but cosy for relaxing. Personally I liked the outside bath (women only) because it's facing to the river side. Free wifi in lobby and little library, sometimes wifi works in standard bedroom as well because it's situated right above the reception. Complimentary tea in bedroom and free coffee during the day in the lobby. I loved the dinner and breakfast, typical Japanese and has variety in ingredients. Breakfast (8-9am) is heavy for those who eat a sandwich or cereals in the morning. Free shuttle bus to the village information center and free pick up (I think only the area between the information center and Sanga)

As Honeymooners, we had an amazing time at Ryokan Sanga. The staff were very lovely and accommodating. The location was so private and away from the other onsens/ryokans nearby which made it more quiet and peaceful area.
Their staff have provided excellent service from food to our room. This is highly recommended for honeymooners and couples.

Room Tip: Ho no ki room had our private outdoor onsen. It was worth booking this room!

This is a thoroughly delightful place, with a wonderful staff, lovely food and excellent accomodations. It will probably be a while before we are back to Kyushu, but if we manage to go, we will come back here for sure. It was probably the most exquisite hotel with the loveliest food we have ever experienced. A logistics tip, if you are coming by car, be sure to give your GPS Kurokawa Onsen, and not Ryokan Sanga, as our GPS sent us on wild goose chase over roads that really barely existed, before we decided it must be wrong, returned to the main road, made our way to Kurokawa Onsen and from there to Sanga. This Onsen is a great trip to make if you are driving to Mt Aso out of Kumomoto.

Room Tip: We splurged on a suite with its own private onsen, which was lovely, but I suspect there are no bad...
