We went to Shioya Diner on Naoshima based on a recommendation in our guide book. It was a really surreal experience - in an excellent kind of a way! We had the chicken BBQ combo and some fries and a couple of beers - All delicious. The 1950s music adds to the atmosphere adds to the decor - you can really imagine you are in an American haunt in the Pacific in the 1950s.
However, what really made this place for us was the kindness and hospitality of the owners. We were a little too early for dinner, but he started the grill a little early for us and also warned us that the portions were big, so we could probably make do with one plate between us (unlike many places that force you to have at least one main course each!). We decided to stick around after dinner to enjoy a couple fo drinks and the music when the female owner came rushing in to tell us to come outside quickly! He looked up a word in his Japanese-English dictionary and told us there was a Lunar Eclipse happening right now! What an experience to witness on an island in Japan! If they hadn't told us, we may have missed it - so we will be eternally grateful!
If you are on Naoshima, pop in here for your dinner and a beer before or after visting the baths, or even just after a long day sightseeing!
