We went to Shioya Diner on Naoshima based on a recommendation in our guide book. It was a really surreal experience - in an excellent kind of a way! We had the chicken BBQ combo and some fries and a couple of beers - All delicious. The 1950s music adds to the atmosphere adds to the decor - you can really imagine you are in an American haunt in the Pacific in the 1950s.

However, what really made this place for us was the kindness and hospitality of the owners. We were a little too early for dinner, but he started the grill a little early for us and also warned us that the portions were big, so we could probably make do with one plate between us (unlike many places that force you to have at least one main course each!). We decided to stick around after dinner to enjoy a couple fo drinks and the music when the female owner came rushing in to tell us to come outside quickly! He looked up a word in his Japanese-English dictionary and told us there was a Lunar Eclipse happening right now! What an experience to witness on an island in Japan! If they hadn't told us, we may have missed it - so we will be eternally grateful!

If you are on Naoshima, pop in here for your dinner and a beer before or after visting the baths, or even just after a long day sightseeing!

I visited Naoshima Island for a couple of days and stumbled upon this great restaurant. It has an American diner theme from the 50`s and is like stepping back in time with the decor and owners dressed in 50`s.

The owner and his wife run the restaurant and are very sweet and helpful, who speak good English. There is an English menu and I choose the 3 beef combo which consisted of two seasoned steaks that are cooked on a BBQ at the front and three side dishes; sweetcorn, mashed potatoes and salad.

They also have milkshakes and serve a variety of other meals including open sandwiches, tacos and homemade scones with tea.

The prices are very reasonable with most meals between 700 to 1000 Japan Yen. The restaurant is situated next door to the Naoshima Baths (I♥湯 “I Love YU”) by the Miyanoura Port.

Enjoy and this restaurant is a must if you visit Naoshima Island.
