“Good service, great food”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

Stayed for two nights in May 2013 with my wife. The tatami-style rooms are spacious and comfortable, the service is attentive but not overbearing, and the location is a convenient short walk from the train station and from the main tourist attractions of the town. It is on a side street with minimal traffic, and there was essentially no noise audible in our room aside from the wind and the burbling of the fountain in the fish pond in the building's garden.

The food deserves a special mention. Every meal we had (two dinners, two breakfasts) was superb; one of the dinners rates among the top Japanese meals I've ever had. It's a mix of traditional dishes and creative variations, and the preparation is excellent across the board. We would come back just for the food.

There are a few gotchas to be aware of, though nothing that adds up to enough to knock off a star from the rating. The in-room toilet is squat type; there's a western-style toilet in the main hallway. Wi-Fi is provided by Softbank, whose pay-per-day system requires you to have an alternate source of Internet access to access (Softbank emails you an activation code -- not useful if you can't check your email because you haven't activated yet!) And, as is typical for this kind of establishment, the staff's English is very minimal, so be prepared to pantomime if none of your party speaks any Japanese.

A bit far from JR station, 10-15 minutes walking distance. Beautiful Ryokan both exterior and interior. Room is enough for 2 persons with luggage. I highly recommend half-board (dinner and breakfast). Dinner serve as traditional Japanese cuisine, Kiseki. Every portions are great, simple but really delicious. Service is also excellent. Impressed Ryokan.

Went there with my husband and a friend.. It was great! Too bad our plan was so multi-city and was able to stay there for only 1 night, would really love to stay longer! The staffs are very friendly and helpful, though they don't speak much English, that wasn't a problem at all. The meals are superb! (Really recommend half-board here). The onsen was nice, and the city is really nice..

Will try to return soon.

My husband and I spent two nights here, and although it rained for much of the time, driving the carp out of the main street canals, we still had a lovely time, and made a day trip to Hagi by bus....much quicker than the train trip. We were sorry that we could not do the steam train trip, but our dates just did not coincide......it would be worth checking if you are a train buff, as the steam train only runs on particular days and only in summer. I had visited Tsuwano over 20 year earlier, in Autumn, and now would love to return in Spring and Winter. Would stay at Miegetsu again, though I wonder if the subtlety of the gorgeous kaiseki dishes was wasted on we mere gaijin. Our hostess insisted on driving us to the station the morning we left for Kyoto, and gave us the train timetable.....nothing seemed too much trouble. Tsuwano is lovely...a photo op at every turn. We would loved to have done the torii walk in the evening, but did not due to rain. Next time!

My wife and I stayed here in May 2009 for our honeymoon for three nights. The meals were so big that we couldn't really finish them and never had to eat lunch. The service was impeccable.

We stayed for three nights at this perfect ryokan. The staff is very friendly, the most hospitable persons we had ever met! Rooms are large and very clean. All day fresh hot water and tea at your room. The onsen is great with a separate one for men and one for women. Meals are really great, breakfast is real Japanese with delicious courses, every day different! Dinner was really great too, we had never had so traditional Japanese dinners! All evenings it was a surprise, but the cook made every evening different courses. To be highly recommended!

The village of Tsuwano is relaxing, great opportunities for hiking or hiring a bike and discovering the environment. We made a trip by train from Tsuwano to Hagi, which gives you a pleasant view from the train over the Japanese coastline (train from Tsuwano to Masuda and from Masuda to Hagi).

The ambience and the hospitality here are balm for the soul. The food at both breakfast and dinner is first-rate - even my notoriously critical Japanese husband enthused over it. They will make up packed lunches too, which we didn't try, but can imagine would be similarly high quality. The rooms are typically tiny, with Japanese-style toilets (slightly smelly) and a row of shared sinks, but that's authenticity for you. The bath was very fragrant relaxing, not too hot, though would have been nice if it had been open in the morning. A delightful town with some good hikes and interesting temples and museums. The Anno Mitsumasa Gallery is charming.
