“An amazing ski-in ski-out hostel with an incredible bath.”
Reviewed March 6, 2011

This hostel is located on the slopes of Alts Ski resort. It is a large facility hostel and feels a little empty during the weekdays. However, on the weekend the amount of people increases. I stayed in the 6-bunk room which was really nice especially because of a center table, desk, closet space to sinks and separate bathroom. The hostel has a great kitchen and a small store where you can buy food. However, it is much better and cheaper if you arrange with the front desk to give you a ride into the city to pick up groceries. The bath in the hotel is absolutely amazing. Every morning I spent at least a half hour in the bath that overlooks Bandai Mountain.

Samurai Riders's claim to fame is its location: a hostel that is ski-in/ski-out. The building itself is a standard box architecture hotel, but everything inside is well kept and spacious. Apparently, the hostel was intended to be a more upscale hotel, but it didn't work out. The solution was great. Make a place that should be a nice hotel into a hostel--the result makes for a very nice hostel. The best feature besides the ski-in/ski-out location is the bathing rooms/on site onsen. The bathing pool is large and looks out toward Lake Inawashiro and Mt. Bandai (a volcano), a 5-star view that belongs to what is now...a hostel. The one drawback is the lack of facilites around the hostel, in particular restaurants and shopping. With that said, the hostel I heard is looking in to providing better transportation to Bandai-machi, the small village in the valley below (yet this has not been set up in time for this review). In the town, guests staying at the hostel can purchase groceries and cook their supplies in the community kitchen, which is a great way to meet other travelers. One other highlight of the hostel comes with having a 20% discount to the real onsen (hot spring bath) a 5-minute walk, or 1-minute bus ride, from Samurai Riders. The onsen has multiple baths, including one red-rich in minerals, as well as another that sits on a bluff outdoors and looks out toward the lake and volcano.
