The Kanyo Hotel is a lovely, old style Japanese traditional hotel, offering Japanese tatami mat sleeping configurations as well as western bed options as well. Opt for the traditional tatami beds for a great experience. Our room also had an amazing 5 star view of the ocean, and the nearby town that was devastated in the 2011 tsunami. The true draw of this hotel is their Japanese Onsen, or natural mineral spring water baths, similar to western jacuzzis but with no bubbles and chlorine - just thermal hot waters from Mother Nature herself. There are certain rules and steps to using the onsens, but easy enough to learn and utilize.
The staff were great and friendly, and the facilities are very clean and organized. I have to say that this resort is more like a vintage 1970’s hotel that was kept up really nicely, despite the "older" furnishings, but that's part of the appeal. Overall a great place, deserving of it's already high praise and ranking/stars. Very recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for traditional style tatami rooms vs. western style.

mipal7 san,
Thank you very much for your highly appreciated comments.
I am very happy to hear that you have enjoyed Japanese holidays with us such as onsen, tatami, tradition and more.
Please try to come back to see how the town recovered if you have chance to visit Japan again.

We stayed at the hotel last weekend and the area which was stricken by the devastating tsunami in 2011. Part of our trip involved work so we had the opportunity to experience the hotel from both the business and tourist's perspective. The conference room and facilities were solid, and the meeting room had an amazing view of the coast line. The restaurants were 4-star and service was top-notch. The highlight was the outdoor bath (rotenburo) on the 2nd floor just above the shore. We woke up early and experienced the sunrise at 5:45am while in the bath -- truly amazing. From a pure hotel guest experience we were very pleased. Add in the fact that this area has suffered such tragedy and that the Kanyo Hotel acted as an emergency evacuation shelter for months after the disaster, and it's well worth the visit. Spotless, a bit dated but we will be back.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view of the bay

Stayed here for an students exchange visit for the Kizuna project. The hotel is beautiful and affords a grand view of the Pacific Ocean that is worth waking up early in the morning to see. They restaurant upstairs also has a good view and good food, although the lines can be a little too long at times. The rooms are Japanese-style, meaning you sleep on a comfortable mattress on the floor, but the bathrooms are Western-style (but a little small).

Room Tip: The rooms on the lower level offer an even closer view of the ocean

We had wonderful experience staying in ryokans specially at the Hotel Kanyo. We liked the tatami floor and the mattresses to sleep.Could see the sun rise at 5.40am from the room and also the pacific ocean. My husband wore Kimono n went for dinner. Our room number was 1001.Thanks to our friend shoichi n Yoshiko. The food specially the japanese dinner was excellent.Very very different and healthy too.We were thrilled to see the live shellfish and the rice got cooked on the table. The staffs were very nice.Only Thing is we could not go to Public bath. The souvenir shop was excellent.Best thing is we could meet the owner and took a group photo with her.She is a very nice lady and have heard about her from our friend Yoshiko.

I am very happy to know you have experienced Japanese Ryokan as we are one of the tipical and local authentic ryokans in Japan.
I hope you come back to Japan in a different season as our country shows another beauty in a different colour and different taste.
Thanks again!

I selected this hotel to hear the real story of Tsunami. This hotel has the tsunami devastated area bus tour with storyteller. It was about 1 hour drive, but I could hear what happened after the 3/11. I can't experience it at usual life.

The room has enough area and one bedroom. Hotel has 2 onsen, 1 has open-air bath and sauna room. Scenery from the room and onsen were excellent. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. Hotel has the little library collecting manga, my sons enjoyed reading them.

Seagull could be seen from the room. Maybe they don't afraid human but little bit noisy.
