My wife and I came to stay here hoping to see take the wildlife boat tour the next morning. Well, we arrived less than an hour before one of the worst blizzards I've ever seen in Hokkaido - snow blasting the windows and 50mph winds shaking and rocking the building all night. When we woke up the next morning, the power had been out since 2AM, and every road between Rausu and the rest of the island was closed. But breakfast was still on (and surprisingly included pancakes - that might have been an extra kindness), a generator was running, sinks and toilets worked fine, and the place was warm. The very kind proprietors even let us stay in our room past check out time until the roads opened up. All in all, I was very grateful to have weathered the nasty storm in a warm, solid log house rather than trapped on the road somewhere (sadly, eight people died in the storm). But even if there had been no blizzard, I think our experience would have been just as enjoyable. Rausu is beautiful and a Canadian Log House is such a lovely, out-of-place structure on the rugged coast, with views of Russian-controlled Kunashiri. Plus, the food was good, the bath was warm, the price was right, and most importantly, I felt at home there. I think we'll be back next winter and give it another try!
