Well worth the trip to the top of the volcano on the ropeway.

Fantastic views and some wonderful photo ops.

Here you can take a ropeway (cable-car) ride up Mt Uzusan (yet another active volcano that last erupted in 2000). Learn about eruptions and the history of Mt. Uzu.

Once up on the summit you get to take great photos of Showashinzan and Mt Uzu. If you are lucky, you can even catch a glimpse of the city skyline in the far distance (only on clear skies).

At the summit office, you have a choice of staying near the office area (there is a photo taking platform built to take photos of Showashinzan (smoking in the back)) or you can take a short walk up (not for the faint-hearted) Mt Uzu to the crater site of the volcano. Over here you can get a nicer view for more photo-taking opportunity.

There is a nature walk here as well for those interested to go near the crater location. I didn't have enough time to do it so I cannot comment on this. Looks interesting.

The summit office also houses a souvenir shop, vending machines and washroom facilities. Ropeway travel every 15 minutes. So if you missed one ride, wait for the next one.

My 4 year old son was thrilled along with my wife and I to be hiking on an active volcano. The view from the ropeway and the viewing stations were breathtaking. We hiked the whole way to the other side of Usuzan and back again. Make sure you get the 10% discount coupon from the website.
It was hot and we could feel the heat of the ground under our feet rising up. When we got to the other side, the sea breeze was a welcome relief. Make sure you take water for everyone in your group and maybe some fruit or snacks for the little ones. The hike is not a must see for everyone, (we only saw one older gentleman the entire time) but we enjoyed ourselves and were rewarded with some beautiful views. There was no lava, but the caldera was steaming hot.

If you are on tour through Hokkaido, going to Toya lake and take the Usuzan Ropeway is a must.
The views are amazing. You can see the lake and if you walk a bit, even a crater. The only problem is that it's a bit expensive but I recommend it strongly.

I would say 3-4 hours of leisurely exploration. Remember to print out 10% discount coupon from website for gondola ride. 1 coupon is enough for a family. Best to go in the morning while you still have heaps of energy. There's the 600 steps to climb to one of the viewing platform and if you are still energetic, walk down to the outer rim of the crater which will take 2 hrs to and fro.
