“An excellent overnight stay”
Reviewed August 22, 2012

We spent one night at Pension Ohno during a road trip in Hokkaido. We were travelling with our son who is working in Japan and speaks Japanese. We were greeted warmly by the owner and shown to our rooms, both overlooked the lovely Lake Toya. The rooms were large by Japanese standards, clean and comfortable. Our bathrooms were the typical Japanese small capsule bathrooms, again very clean and functional. Breakfast was served in the dining room overlooking the lake, we chose Western breakfast and our son had traditional Japanese, both were very good.
We walked to the village for dinner and to watch the fireworks, if you cross the road you can walk beside the lake into the main village area. We enjoyed our stay at Pension Ohno and are happy to recommend it.

Room Tip: Try to book a room overlooking the lake.

This lodging was highly recommended in Trip Advisor reviews but I had difficulty locating it through either agent or independent website, eventually managed to get their contact number and reservation was made over the phone. The friendly Lady Boss and her Chinese speaking Assistant (Ms. Wong) were very helpful in answering all my questions and confirmation was processed quickly.

This small lakeside complex was pleasantly situated, comprising of about 10 guest rooms, a private onsen and a restaurant downstairs where dinner and breakfast were served. The room was nicely designed and furnished, it was clean and neat with view of Lake Toya. A convenience store was located right next door with 2 mins. walk.

We had a 2-meal plan per day during our 2 days' stay and were served with fresh, quality sashimi and delicious food, each meal was scrumptious with a different thoughtful menu, nice treat to us.

Since we rented a car, it was convenient to drive (for about 5 mins.) to town centre in order to have a close view of the nightly firework. One can also walk there from Pension Ohno but you would need to walk alongside the main road (no footpath) in some sections.

Our stay at Lake Toya was wonderful, due to the homely Pension Ohno.

Although Pension Ohno is slightly off the main area where the bus terminal is, and where all the main hotels are, our lovely stay here outwweighs this aspect.

The rooms were very clean and very cosy! The toilets are the same usual small ones you get in most of Japan. We travelled as a couple, and although they did not have queen sized beds, they gave us a twin room, which had 2 super single beds. They were on rollers, so we just wheeled them together. :)

There is a some sort of common bath (one for ladies, one for men). A small one, but very well-maintained.
For the ladies one, they had a changing room and provided at least 4 different pairs of branded shampoo and conditioner! And because it's such a small guesthouse, you can usually get the bath to yourself! I went to the bath twice, and for the first time, I had it to myself! For the 2nd time, I bumped into a mother and daughter. The bath is big enough to accomodate about 4 people comfortably.

The best part of this place was its meals! We stayed for 2 nights, and initially booked one dinner. Before this, we did not have any meals in our hotels as we felt that it was expensive. However, this meal totally changed my perspective! The dinner was an add-on of about 2000yen (which was about 30SGD/pax), and it was TOTALLY worth every single cent.

We had our meals in the eating area, which faced the road, and you could see the lake in the day. The dinner on the first night and breakfast on the following morning was so awesome that we decided to have dinner there the 2nd day as well!

The dinner on the 1st day consists of sashimi, grilled salmon, beef stew (just to list a few). There were lots of small cute dishes that were made of either squid or salmon. All were really high quality dishes! The next morning, breakfast was wonderful too! We had the usual set-up of little cute dishes, rice, miso soup, and a grilled fish. :) The grilled fish was really lovely. I ate 2 bowls or rice when my norm was just 1 bowl. The dinner on the 2nd night was equally great too! Initially, we thought that they might serve the same food, but the lady boss said they will decide on the menu based on what they buy from the market, so the set menu changes daily! The main course in the 2nd dinner was hamburg steak and stuffed crab shell. We felt so happy just having the meals alone. :)

The lady boss was also really really nice. Although she can only speak very little English, she was very helpful with the public transport. On the day that we left, she was afraid that we were confused about which bus stop to go to, and she ferried us to the bus stop!

If you are here for the fireworks, then it may not be so good to stay here. We could still see the fireworks, but not from our room - we had to walk out to the lake side, which was a nice walk anyway. The fireworks are not so fantastic, but maybe it depends on the period you go in. Another possible downside is the access of the place. You either walk 35min from the main area, or take a bus, but the bus frequency is not very high. It is in between the main area and Mt Usuzan, so it's good in some way too, depending on your activities in Lake Toya.

But in general, if you don't mind the walk, slow pace of life, waiting for buses, then Pension Ohno is a highly-recommended place to stay in. :) It was like going back to a nice and cosy home at the end of the day. :)
