Shiretoko is a place where many people may not know of. But if you go to Hokkaido, suggest to you visit this "ends of the earth" (translated from Ainu Language of the word Shiretoko). Splendid view of the Five Lakes and mountainous sights. Don't forget to take the Shiretoko Cruise too! You may be able to catch some wild bears in your camera!

There are no admission fees or whatsoever to the sightseeing, except for the Cruise and the Day Bus.

Actually travelled in October 2011.

An easy way to explore the region is to visit the Shiretoko Goko walkway. The start point of the elevated walkway is the parking lot, leading to the shore of Lake 1 and return back to the parking lot. The walkway is about 800meters and would take around 40mins to 1 hour for visit, wheelchair-friendly too. This walkway gives visitors an experience the beauty of the Shiretoko Five Lakes region in a quick and safe way. We saw a couple of Hokkaido Sika deers during our walk.

Along the walkway, there are 3 observation points. On the first one you could have a great view of Shiretoko mountain range, the second one you could have a good view of Sea of Okhotsk while the last one you could have a great view for Lake 1.
If you go by your own vehicle, please note they do charge a Parking fees.

If you want to explore more and visit Lake 2 to 5 via the nature trail, you do need to join a guided tour led by a licensed guide. As time is limited for us, we just visit the elevated walkway. Please refer to Shiretoko Goko Lake official website for more information.

If you like to commune with nature without having to undergo strenuous activity, this one is for you. You have to spend at least 90 minutes to trek the trails divided into slow and fast option. The view is just spectacular, each of the five lakes have its own characteristics. This outstanding scenery, with its flora and fauna is more than worth to be included as component of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan.

Public transportation is directly available though scarce (scheduling is vital). You have to undergo a seminar/ briefing regarding safety for possible bear encounters and some reminders on how to keep nature unspoiled.

We visited during the tail-end of summer, where skies are blue and the vegetation at its greens. I look forward to visiting this during springtime.

The walking trails to the Shiretoko Five Lakes were closed when I was there. However, there is an elevated walkway leading first lake. the journey took about half an hours and the views are very scenic. You can also see wildlife, e.g. deers along the way.
