Shiretoko Prince Hotel Kazanamiki
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 7, 2010

The Shiretoko Prince Hotel Kazanamiki is your basic onsen resort hotel that can be found all over Hokkaido. The lobby and entrance area have been well maintained, and lack the run-down appearance that afflicts many an onsen hotel in Hokkaido. The rooms, however, definitely show signs of age. They are certainly comfortable and clean, but they are not in the same condition as the rest of the hotel.

The onsen on the first floor is great, but there's nothing particularly special about it. There's no great view, and it's not that different from onsens you could find at significantly cheaper hotels.

The buffet dinner was great! Although many of the side dishes were average, the crab and steak were fantastic. I also found no fault with the service at the hotel - the staff was friendly and very helpful. We appreciated the plate of fresh fruit found in our room fridge each day too!

The major downside to the hotel was its location. It sits on a hill about a twenty-minute walk from the Utoro bus terminal. There are shuttle buses that connect the hotel to the bus terminal, but there was no time schedule clearly posted, especially for foreign guests.

Although I quite enjoyed this hotel, I probably would not stay here again due to the price and the location.

This hotel is on a “hotel row” just a few blocks from downtown Utoro. It is only a few kilometres from the entrance to the Unesco-designated Shiretoko National Park and is most easily visited by car. The building is a large resort hotel tower, with adequate parking all around it. An overly-enthusiastic greeter gave me much unneeded assistance in parking the car. There is a bustling, not very comfortable, lobby, with a good store within it.

Apparently there are a variety of room styles. Ours was in the new south wing built in 2000 and was a combination of western and Japanese - a tatami sitting room with a western sleeping area and twin beds, along with a western desk. This was not altogether convenient, as the only place to watch television was from the bed. The layout of the toilet, washroom and bath were Japanese, much more roomy than most, but with very poor lighting for shaving.

Supper, included with the room, was proudly advertised as an “open kitchen,” available only to guests in the new wing. This turned out to be not entirely as we imagined. In our room we were presented with menu choices for some of the main dishes. This was done in a rushed fashion by a rather ungraceful maid. Dinner was in a western dining room. This was only one of several restaurants in the hotel. Others seemed to be for tour groups: there were a number of tours at the hotel. The food choices and quality were quite good.

Breakfast, a Viking (buffet), was in a different restaurant. Again there was a good selection of both western and Japanese dishes. The layout was not very comfortable, with many people jostling in a crowded buffet line at the front of the room, then carrying their trays a long distance looking for a free table.

The Shiretoko Prince was the most expensive hotel we stayed at in Hokkaido. While it is a reasonable choice for a visit to the Shiretoko Park, it wasn’t particularly good value.

We checked in to the Prince Hotel Kazanamiki without any prior reservations - it was Sunday and, lucky for us, the hotel gave us a really good deal (less than 25,000 yen) for room plus two meals - all the more when considering we were travelling with 2 young children. This is an idea for those who are travelling in off-peak periods ! The hotel itself is old, but very well maintained and spotless. One gets the sense it's something of an old dame staffed by lots of similarly old timers, who bowed repeatedly at the car park as our rental car left the hotel. It's wonderfully quaint and warm. We had twin beds plus a tatami seating area which at night, was turned by the staff into a futon sleeping area. Our room also had a view of the turquoise sea - bliss ! Dinner was a marvellous seafood spread featuring japanese snow crabs, various types of sashimi, tempura, etc. etc. Breakfast was similarly sumptuous. We left the hotel amazed by our luck at having stumbled on such a find at the last minute ! Oh, this place is up a small hill so it would be better for those who are driving.

Booked online and stayed at the Shiretoko Prince a few nights during a drive holiday around Hokkaido.

The Shiretoko Prince is actually on a little hill behind the little port town of Utoro ( 10 - 15 min walk up the hill ), which provides a nice little view of the harbour ( pic included ).

None of the staff appear to speak English - a few speak mandarin, so if you don't speak Japanese, you may have some language barriers. In fact, in the whole town of Utoro, the only people we met who spoke English were the proprietor of the Tasuke restaurant in Utoro and the promoters for the sightseeing boat trips.

The hotel itself is fairly large, 9 storeys high, clientele appear to be mostly Japanese tourists. The onsen's ( public bath ) on the first floor.

Our plan had breakfast and dinner included, served at the hotel restaurant, buffet style. Food was good, with generous helpings of fresh King Crab, really fresh sashimi, and other Japanese cuisine. Breakfast also include croissants and cornflakes.

The room we had included two single beds, and a tatami, approximately 4 x 4 m, probably sufficient to sleep another four adults. The toilet was modest, with a half-sized bathtub / showed, sink and sitting toilet. Room was clean, usual Japanese standards.

Access-wise, we drove, but the hotel's probably at least 20 min walk from the bus terminal. It was also much more convenient to drive to the sightseeing places, which were each a few kilometres apart, including the Shiretoko Pass ( very scenic - must see ), the Shiretoko Five Lakes, Furepe Waterfalls, the Oshinkoshin waterfall and the Kamuiwakka waterfall.

All in, a pleasant hotel, but language barriers may prove a problem to non-Japanese speakers.
