A friend and I stayed for two nights in February--with about a foot of snow falling one day. We mostly picked it for the price and central location. Other reasonably priced options would have required more complex transport to get into the national park.
The room was clean and warm. Bath and bathrooms are shared. They had Japanese-style communal baths in the lower level. While they spoke little English, the staff were friendly and we figured out how to communicate just fine. They kindly drove us to one of the larger hotels in town (in a foot of snow) to catch our bus so we didn't have to haul our luggage.
We didn't eat here, so I can't speak to that, but we did have great ramen nearby at a place with an orange sign kind of near the world natural heritage museum and road station. There are several convenience stores within walking distance, and a few restaurants--probably more open in the summer.More
