I'm pretty in love with Akajima's Nishigahama (Iribama)beach. while a lot of coral has died these last few years, there is still enough colorful fish and occasionally a turtle to warrant the 1000 yen or so for snorkling gear

beaches are paradise, nearly unspoiled and non-overcrowded...
close to Naha (less than 1 hr express boat)
very friendly people
a lot of outdoor activities (snorkling, kayaking, swimming, whale watching (seasonal), etc..)

Took a hancho to Naha bought a round trip for the ferry. awesome view on the ferry, went camping on the araha island in the keramas it was amazing. we climbed the rocks, went snorkeling and we camping on the beach. Bring lots of bug spray and venture around their is a kazebo that you should deff go to and also eat their very good curry. the mango smoothies are awesome and also go hiking back up the main road and you will find a huge amount of stairs, climb them you will be tired but the view at the top is awesome and also on the way down make a right and you will run into this really cool slide and jungle gym.

Spent 2 nights on Zamami Island, population around 700 people. Beautiful, quiet island, with a very small village of small shops, restaurants, etc. Beaches here are the main attraction - excellent snorkeling/diving at the shallow reefs and beyond. Whale watching and sea turtle watching during particular seasons. Great, easy hiking watching sunset/sunrise at the observatories. Amazingly warm and friendly people.
