I found this cafe in my walks around Nozawaonsen located near Ogama - the cooking onsen. Sitting at the window or on the floor - both are a lovely experience. Lots of things to look at in this cafe. The staff are very nice and welcoming and serve great coffee along with delicious curry I had with an onsen cooked egg and a great croque monsieur. The Nappa Cafe is so cosy when it’s snowing outside. I really enjoyed my visits there.

The walls are a mix of 80s Japanese pop culture kitsch and cat worship. Occupy the kiddies with some amusing cat picture books. Leaving you free to enjoy coffee and cake. The orange peel chocolate cakes is a must try. The cheesecake was also stellar.

A limited selection lunch menu is available.

It’s a hidden gem of a place up the top of the hill near the Onsen for villagers to do their cooking - and worth the 5 min walk. As you walk in, you’ll hear the steam hiss of a real coffee machine operated by a proper barista - and this sound foretells the wonderful Australian style coffee that you will get here.
Everything else about the experience is Japanese - from the owner using a little brush to help you shed the 5cm of powder snow that has accumulated on your clothes on the walk up, to the cat cafe style decor (no real cats here though) and the other pieces of Japanese kawaii (cute) decor, to the gentle, attentive service. It’s not cheap at around top yen for a cup of coffee, but it is worth it. The daily cakes are also quite nice. There are 2 seating areas - a typical Japanese sit on the floor cushion arrangement as well as a larger table for about 6 people and a bench with seats for 4-6. They also serve light meals, but we did not try these. There is a beautiful view from the bench seat area.
The coffee was so good, we went back 3 times during our stay.

I followed other reviews to Nappa cafe and wasn’t disappointed. Great chai, the best Croque Monsieur, and SALAD, (hard to find in winter in Nozawa)

The owners are friendly and the decor, Japanese Kitsch, is cute.

Only disappointment is opening time of 11am, (not open for pre ski coffee) and you need to check which days it is closed to avoid disappointment.
Loved it, visited 3 times!
