This was the best decision of our whole trip. The hotel is the only ski in ski out hotel in the area. The area is not a busy area and yet so close to all the lifts. My husband and I literally skied to the lifts and back from the lifts to the door. The hotel is amazing Koichi is great, funny and speaks perfect English. Mamma san and Pappa san are also so friendly and amazing. The staff at the Kuraya hotel make you feel so comfortable and at home. The breakfast was amazing every morning and we ate so much food. The dinner at the hotel was also fantastic. They have a private onsen and a public hot spring (one for ladies and one for men). The onsens are amazing and so relaxing. The hotel has a drying room and even does ski hire as well. We stayed 10 days and the whole time we stayed we loved every bit of it. Koichi took us on an outing the first night we arrived, we went to the light show which was pretty cool and then we went to have some amazing sushi. If you want to stay at a hotel that is close to everything is literally ski in and ski out with Amazing owners and workers then stay at this hotel. WE loved it and when we go back to Japan we will stay here. Koichi even dropped us at the train station and picked us up.

Room Tip: I am sure any room would be great.

Booked 2 Tatami style Cottages for the four of us on a guys ski trip. Our first trip to Japan to ski and didn't know what to expect. Booking included meals, breakfast and dinner.
Forget boring eggs and bacon, we we pampered with the full blown Japanese experience. Dinners were awesome.I have to admit that it took a day or two to get used to the food but wouldn't have changed a thing. We soon found that we couldn't wait until dinner time.
The rooms were large, comfortable and warm.
The Hotel is absolute slope side front row central, ski in and out. Each morning we would walk out the back door, click into our skis and roll down to the chair lift.
The owners/staff are lovely people, I would not hesitate to return

Every review you read here is true- this is the best family hotel in hakuba!
We arrived in Japan when the huge snow storm hit so we couldn't get to hotel kuraya as planned. Koichi was so accommodating and changed our dates around with no charge. After staying in new hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto we arrived at hotel kuraya with big smiles on our faces. It was very clean, warm and welcoming. We met Koichi's family and felt at home right away. It really is a ski in ski out hotel, only 100m walk to the Sakka lift so we hit Happoone in the afternoon and fell inlove with hakuba.
We stayed in a traditional room in the main building. It was big, clean and comfy! The onsens are great, feel great after a big day snowboarding.
The food is amazing at the hotel you don't need to leave. We did have two great meals down the road in our 7 nights there but didn't need to.
The staff in the restaurant are beautiful and you will experience excellent service.
This hotel is the best value for money you will get in the snow. We were shocked by how cheap it cost 2 people for 7 nights, breakfast daily and 5 dinners, beers, 5 lift passes - $1557AU
I can't describe how much we loved staying here but we were definitely sad to leave... Koichi would do anything for his guests and really goes above and beyond. We know we will be back to see our friends at Hotel Kuraya!
Thank you so much Koichi and family :)

We stayed at Hotel Kuraya for 5 nights in Feb in a Western Cottage Room. The rooms are basic however clean, comfortable and are huge. Wi-Fi is also available. We ate breakfast every morning and had 3 dinners there, all of which were delicious and there was seriously so much food. We definitely did not go hungry. The ski-in ski-out aspect was fantastic. It was good to have a bit of a break and be able to go to your room if you needed to. Hotel Kuraya do super cheap lift passes as well as cheap equipment hire (only cost ~$20AUD for ski hire for the whole time - beginner equipment only). For more advanced skiiers/snowboarders or if Hotel Kuraya didn't have your size, there was a central snowsports shop just across the road that you can hire from. Koichi, his family and all the other staff are amazing. It's the little things that count... I loved the teapots on the table we would drink green tea from and when I enquired about where I could purchase one, they surprised me and had secretly gone out and bought me one so we didn't have to go ourselves to the shop. On our last night, we went out for sushi with other travellers and Koichi and he surprised us with a detour to a beautiful illuminated garden with fairylights everywhere. Koichi also dropped us off and picked us up from the train station. Hotel Kuraya is about a 20 to 25 min walk to the village however there is a little convenience store just up from Hotel Kuraya if you needed basic items. All in all a great place. Like everyone says, you do feel like part of the family at Hotel Kuraya!

Kuraya Hotel has plenty of reviews stating how much people enjoyed their stay. I couldn't help but hop on and share our great experiences also!
From being collected at the bus top to our final departure, Hotel Kuraya was everything we needed in our ski trip. Our highlight though was being able to suit up after breakfast and be first on the lifts in the morning, by literally stepping out of the back door. We initially purchased accommodation with breakfast, after the first few nights eating elsewhere and being disappointed, we stayed in and ate dinners. All I can say is WOW - over the following five nights we ate traditional Tempura, Sashimi, Miso soup, local pickles, smoked fish, and we also cooked ourselves in a hot pot style

Our family of four stayed here in January ( 2 A, 2 C aged 14 and 9 )
When we have gone away before we have always stayed in apartments so I deliberated for a long time as to whether this type of accommodation would suit us.
I needn't have worried - the hotel and the trip were both fantastic. We had two Japanese style tatami rooms overlooking the slopes. Great position - close to the lifts, the magic carpet, and could watch the kids tobaggoning on an afternoon.
The rooms were spacious , very comfortable and had wi fi
We had the breakfast/ dinner package - the food was great and there was plenty of it!!!!
After staying here we stayed at the Hilton, Tokyo bay and visited Disney. My daughter cried when we left kuraya and wanted to skip Disney and stay longer. She was right - hotel Kuraya and Hakuba were much better - what makes this place fantastic is Koichi, his parents and team - they were so hospitable and friendly we felt right at home
Judging from the other reviews written recently looks like we may be seeing some of our fellow house guests when booking next time
Book this place - it would be impossible to find better

2nd visit was more special than the first. I didn't think it was possible to be looked after that much by strangers. My 2 primary school kids had a great time. My husband doesn't eat seafood and they did special selections for dinner every night. We were fed until we burst. For 8 days we didn't eat anywhere else. My fav luxury was the onsen. Hope to see you next year. Thanks Kuraya.
