Hotel Kuraya was more like home away from home. Koichi and his mum (mama-san) were amazing. Their staff were so kind and caring. We stayed in a wester room which was huge for 4 nights. It also had an ensuite but we could still use the onsens.
For an extra 1000 Yen we got breakfast which was so lovely. The best part was the sukiyaki dinner that we had one night. Amazing! Mama-san even helped us to post our snowboard bag to Tokyo where we picked it up 2 weeks later.
This is definitely a perfect ski-in-ski-out accommodation. Pretty retro but it did feel like home.

Room Tip: If you want a bit of shower privacy get a western room as you get an ensuite. The onsen is lovely th...

Like my fellow travellers, I am not sureI want to share this experience! This hotel is gold! Koichi and his family offer the best experience you could possibly want. They truly treat everyone like family. I wish I had a better understanding of the Japanese language because mamma San deserves the respect. You have to experience the hospitality to appreciate it. I could go on about the ski conditions in Hakuba, but anyone who has done their homework already knows it is the best. As far as accommodation goes, we stayed in a Japanese style cabin which was more than comfortable for 5 ,at least for one night, then we had 2 rooms, at the suggestion Koichi. It was more than adequate! My family and I have had the privilege of traveling to many parts of the world and it never ceases to amaze me the hospitality of some places we stay. This is honestly one of the best. Thank you Koichi and family

Being a travel agent, I did a lot of research into the best place for my friends and I to stay for our annual ski holiday. I wanted a place to suit all budgets, and the most important aspect was to ski in and out. At Hotel Kuraya, you can do this. You step outside the back door, and ski to the Sakka 3 lifts, and not many hotels in Hakuba afford this privilege. However, we were most pleasantly surprised by the amazingly friendly service, and the quality of the meals. Muma-san and her family are amazing cooks. Japanese is my favourite cuisine, and every meal was delicious. It is most definitely a family run business, with such warm hospitality. Koichi, who speaks perfect English took us for a drive to Matsumoto castle for the day when the weather was not so good for skiing. The rooms are not 5 star, but they are extremely clean and comfortable. The rates are very reasonable, and include a beautiful home cooked dinner and breakfast daily. I can not speak highly enough of the friendly service, atmosphere, and excellent meals on offer. A true gem for skiers that want an authentic Japan experience with a beautiful family. Gets busy on the weekends, as it is very popular with Japanese skiers. We will be sure to return again next year.

Room Tip: I would recommend staying in one of their traditional cabins, as they are extremely roomy.

This place was so good last year (See my review) that we stayed again.
This trip was for 2 weeks ending on the 9th Feb 12 and again it was very hard to leave.
We had a "western cabin" this trip that was huge and could fit 4 adults very comfortably but with just 2 of us was great. Comprising of a very large bed sit with a enclosed balcony with double glazed sliding doors and a kitchenette with microwave and electric stove not that we ever used it and ensuite.
Breakfast and dinner where included in the price and was big buy any means with trditional Japanise dinners and western style breakfasts.
Hire was internal and for $20 a day new rear entry boots and new skis that had been used once. Lift Passes in house are cheaper than the ticket offices and half the price of OZ.
Ski from the door which is not very common at Hakuba (Happo one saka) down to the quad through the playground and up to mid station and then change up. Ski in from the home trail to the door and in to the red hot Onsen .....life is good.
First 4 days we had 135cm of fresh powder then the sun was out for 2 days , 1 day of rain and we toured out of town then light snow for the rest of the stay.
Momma son went out of her way again to look after the "Ostralia boys" and Konichi was our personal assistant and guide and mate for the stay.
Torists are down at the moment for all the wrong reasons and the only time we had to wait at a lift was the Gondola on the weekend for 11 minutes but at no other lifts. Its like your own personal mountain.
This is the best place on the hill and we will be back next Feb

Kuraya is ideally located near the Sakka lifts and is genuine ski-in, ski-out. While the rooms are not flash they are very clean and well maintained - absolutely perfect for families. The service was incredible with a very friendly family who could not have been more helpful. They were happy to drive us to Nagano for our day off - no problem, no charge, what time would you like to go? Same applied for trips to restaurants / physio / shopping all over Hakuba. Breakfast was four courses each day (traditional or western - up to you). I used the washing machine (free) and they offered a drier - when I declined drying racks were outside the door by the time I came upstairs. Free WiFi. Onsens in-house. Lift tickets for adults available on-site. It was also relatively low-cost. However, it is the service that I can't recommend highly enough. We will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Western and Japanese rooms available Cottages (apartments) are self-contained with a kitchenette an...

A perfect true ski in ski out location high on Hapo1 on the green beginner slopes and connected to the mountain by home trails and harder runs The [free] beginner training area is a 50mt ski from thedoor and a quad 100mts further This lodge style hotel has been family owned by gererations of the family who still work hard to make sure guests are well catered for.The [big] breakfast is included, great dinners can be arranged and basic ski hire and lift passes at dicount rates are avalible .Smallish clean and warm and quiet roomes .This place was SO much better than expected at the cost.By the time we left it was like leaving old friends. I want it to be the same next year when we all go back , that is allmost empty apart from the weekends so Don,t tell anyone about it .OK ?

Have just returned with 5 friends skiing this great mountain and this hotel is gold.
We did a great deal of research on the net and took a pun on the Kuraya and found a family owned hotel with REAL ski in ski out in the happo one ski area up the Sakka end in the corner of the play ground at half the price of others in the area.
We arrived from West Australia at 3am an Mama-Sun met us at the door (radar??) and took us to our rooms "Sign in tomorrow, brackfast from 7" .Comfy western room with ensuit and no noise. Actually where up at 7 (30cm of fresh snow won’t let me sleep) to the included breaky - fruit, soup, eggs, sausages, toast, juice, tea, coffee and fish (every meal has fish :-) ).
Mama sun (little englich) and son Conchie (We called him frank) great English (studied in the US funny guy) gave us the run down, proper onsen (Got the official sign) and Mama-sun has discount lift tickets on hand, much cheaper than the ticket office.
The Japanese feast was booked for that night and for 8 of the 10 nights there. "Frank is the chef and deserves a Michelin star the food is the best on mountain, they also do a big lunch, and on the weekend they have people waiting outside for tables.
We had to go down 100 meters to the food hall, I kid you not. Seem people from Tokyo come up skiing on the weekends and while the slops get people on them, there was no waiting except for the gondola.
The Hotel also fills on the weekend so don’t pass wind in the onsen, which is a must after a big ski, come to think of it, with the volcanic smell of sulphur, who would know.
Frank has some hire gear though it’s not performance stuff but was good enough and was less than half the price of the hire shops.
The hotel is licensed and serves draft beer of which lubricated many a lunch and rest stop...well ski in beer ski out.. Suntory Whisky ($20) and Saki ($15) from the shop 50 meters up the hill, was left on the bar by us at all times and complimented dinner and opened some funny conversations with other Japanese guests.
A number of Restaurants’ and bars close by and the night shuttle stops DIRECTLY out front and will take you down town to a number of bars for $2. The town is Quiet that is not a lot of people through the week and the free day shuttle loops from the Sakka lift 200 meters down the hill to the tourist port in town which has all the info and is the bus port.
Frank....no we will now call him Conchie asked us to accompany him to Negano to a special temple lit up only once a year as he was going to take photos (Camera with a lens as big as a thermos) had a great time and cost...NADA ,nil, nothing seems he likes us, we liked the big fella too..Except he’s a snow boarder :-).
What can I say 20-30cm of powder every morning, rooms spotless, great food and people

Again this place is gold and I could ramble on and on but you WILL NOT DO better than to book this for next year as we already have. See you there late Feb 12
Dave
