Recommended for - bus at the end of the driveway, very spacious rooms, private, light, airy and modern villas, plenty of storage room, fabulous bathroom downstairs, helpful and friendly staff who drive you to the grocery store, restaurants or to connect with buses to other resorts, walking distance to Sakka lift area, nice stroll to Happo One town centre, close to restaurants which are walking distance away, floor to ceiling windows for great views and light, breakfast included in the tariff, yet fully self contained.

Slight drawbacks - not cheap (good price for 5 people compared to other accom in the area though), breakfast was a bit ordinary (but you could have as much as you wanted), needed some more hooks and shelves for things in the bathroom and to hang ski jackets and helmets in the foyer.

Room Tip: All the villas are the same.

The villas themselves were very modern and spacious, even by western standards. We were in a group of 6 and had a trundle bed added to accommodate us all and I never felt that we were short on space.
The kitchen included microwave, stove-top, sink, fridge and small pantry, but we found ourselves eating out most nights, so really only used it to prepare tea and coffee and the occasional snack. If you do want to eat in, however, a free shuttle departs from Gakuto Lodge at 5pm or 6pm to drop you down to the supermarket to collect supplies (one way only though).
Breakfast was provided for us at the lodge across the road each morning. It is a fairly western style breakfast with a slight Japanese bent - some mornings you get cold potato salad with your bacon and eggs. In any case, it was comprehensive and great to fill you up for a day of skiing.
The villas are situated in Wadano forest, so we were looking out over a fairly densely wooded area, which was pleasant to wake up to in the morning. The location was great for transport (bus stop 10m away) but it was also an easy stroll through the forest down to the Sakka lift. There were plenty of nice restaurants within walking distance in Wadano so we stayed local most nights.
A big thank you to Tori and Henry at Gakuto Lodge, who were very lovely hosts. After multiple feet of snow in the evening, it is nice to wake up and know that they've already cleared the driveway and your doorstep of snow!!

We stayed here in January It was wonderful. The Villa is spotless, modern and warm. The underfloor heating is a little slice of heaven after a big day in the snow. We never had wet gear the next day :) The villa is in a excellent position with bus stop out front, a very short walk to the pickup spot for most tours. Food well you can take your pick.. Gakuto offer a free shuttle twice a night to the local market if you wish to use your kitchen or you have a wide choice of eating options just a short walk away anything from pizza and burgers across the road to devine steak, wonderful Italian and of course traditional Japanese!! Or you can catch a bus into town for more food options.
The staff here are simply lovely Tori and Henry are always happy and willing to help, weather it be arranging dinner reservations pointing out the best ossen or showing you the short cut to the slopes. The option of a hot breakfast was good to have too.
The team are up early clearing the snow from out front of the villas so we never had any hassle getting out and about.

We traveld with our kids who are active and chatty to say the least and not once did we feel anything less then welcome not even an eyebrow raised when bidding for the front seat in the shuttle bus!
The kids loved there large room and having there own bathroom.
We loved our room down stairs with our own bathroom too!! The hot water was always hot with excellent water pressure. Aawesome floor to ceiling windows let you see the to die for view of snow snow and more snow!!

We Highly recommend Gakuto Villas and we can't wait to go back!!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Villas. Rooms were spacious, warm and clean and in a good location. There was approx an 8 minute walk up to the closest lift but you could ski virtually all the way home. The shuttle bus stop was just outside if you could be organised enough to be there on time! Villas were near plenty of restaurants and the managers were very helpful with lifts to restaurants and the shops in the evening.
The villas are screaming out for laundry facilities with only 1 drier and washing machine available for all the lodge and villas. This was really our only negative but I understand that this issue may be addressed by 2014.
Overall though, the Villas were well managed and were a terrific place to stay.

Hi Paula,

Gakuto Villas is glad to let you know that washer/dryers have been installed in each villa since last winter. We are also pleased to announce that the beds in the master bedrooms of Gakuto Villas have been upgraded to a luxurious King size (195cm length by 194cm wide)! We hope that you would choose us on your next trip to Hakuba, and come and enjoy the enhancements that we have made.

Warm regards,
The Gakuto Villas Team

This was our first time skiing in Japan. My husband and 3 children (9,7 & 5) had a great time. Gakuto Villas was perfect , in a great spot, close to the lifts, a great selection of restuarants and great snow ...if your are comparing to the Australia that is !!
Henry and Tory, the caretakers are super friendly and were full of lots of great info and advice for us first timers. They provided transport in the afternoon to the local supermarket and international ATM, which we used regularly.
The villa was just right for the 5 of us and kids enjoyed playing in the snow each afternoon after the day of skiing. If I had to pick on something, I would prefer a bigger bed in the main bedroom, my husband is tall and took up the whole thing ! And I would love to have a washing machine in the Villa.
Would I return ?? Definately !! And next year we are bringing a few other families with us , so look out !! Haha!!
