“New sleak and stylish Aussie gem in rural Japan”
Reviewed January 6, 2011

We stayed here in December. After staying in many hotels out of the big cities of Japan we were pleasantly surprised to find somewhere new and modern in regional Japan.
The place is very Australian. The staff and guests seem to be mostly western. But that didnt bother us- it made staying easier as we dont speak Japanese. The hotel had a fantastic restaurant - fabulous Australian menu including delicious fresh seafood and meat dishes and great wine list!
The Japanese style rooms were gorgeous - with comfy futons and clean modern facilities.
Everything is NEW !!
Great shower! We also walked to the main village - took about 10 minutes.
The hotel also has a small bar and gas fireplace to sit and relax in the evenings.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Phoenix Hotel!

This was my first overseas trip in twenty years, and I could not have wished for a better experience. The hotel was stylish, modern, clean, and simply breathtaking. For a family with diverse needs (as we have adult, teenager and toddler in the mix), I was so pleased with the facilities at the Phoenix Hotel. The staff at Phoenix were always happy to help with any question we had about the region, the food, the sights - and always with a genuine smile. The onsen warmed away every ache and pain from the day on the slopes. The food was second to none - a divine breakfast certainly set us up for the day, and glorious dinner finished off the day perfectly (my favourite? the local pork and the hand made marshmallows). Would love to come again!

We stayed at Phoenix on our first ever ski trip to Japan. The hotel is very well presented, with small but very comfortable rooms, a very well appointed common area, and great bar and restaurant, with very good food and quality wine list. As the project was really still in start up mode when we stayed, the range of services was perhaps a little scaled down but clearly great care had been taken to ensure that quality was the first thing attended to, so it really didn't matter. We found the staff excellent across the board, friendly and relaxed, but professional and attentive. We also had a minor medical issue during our stay and staff consistently went beyond the call to assist in any way. Location is great, very picturesque, probably the most romantic area in the whole valley, and 1 min shuttle to the Happo Gondola.

My only tip would be to ask for a room away from the kitchen, the cool room generator is pretty noisy at night.

They also offer fabulous self contained apartments which we didn't stay in, but visited for a look, and these look brilliant for families.

The Phoenix should be a wonderful hotel. It presents beautifully and has some great facilities.
However, I have to say our experience left us really disappointed.
On the plus, the location is picturesque, the hotel is clean and the beds comfortable.
The onsen-style bath and mist sauna were absolutely fabulous.
There just didn’t seem to be the welcome or warmth we had come to enjoy in Japan.
Reception always took one or two rings of a bell to raise anyone. There was no kettle, let alone the complimentary green tea we had enjoyed everywhere else.
There can be noise issues given the layout of the kitchen/restaurant and the open style of the bar. It didn’t help that there were kids running through the corridors and taking over the restaurant, which could have been managed.
Breakfast was frustrating as it was the same every day – three basic cereals, one white bread, spreads, bacon, eggs etc (which granted were cooked beautifully). There was not one offer of fruit; fresh, canned or other, despite the hotel’s website saying, ‘apples, pears and strawberries from this region are honestly, second to none’. Perhaps they could share some in homemade muffins, stewed apples or some fruit puree and yoghurt, perhaps just a bowl of fresh fruit….. Coffee at breakfast was a self-serve jug which was often cold, enough said.
