Tony and his friendly young staff do an amazing job making sure you have a great stay. Start your day with a full cooked breakfast of your choice (hard to find in Hakuba). Get an up to date snow report and decide what mountain you would like to be driven to. Enjoy some of the famous Japanese snow.
Then wind down at the end of the day with a drink at the White Horse bar and dinner from one of the many restaurants on the Echoland strip.

PS. The beds are like clouds, never slept better.

We stayed in mid January for ten nights with our family of 5 (three kids aged 4, 9 and 11) on a skiing holiday. From the very beginning of the booking process, owner Tony and his staff made this a wonderful experience. Tony gave us lots of advice on booking gear, lessons and so forth before we even left Australia. Picked up at the station, we were taken everywhere in the village and to the slopes that we wanted to go at times that suited us. Every morning we were able to work out best places to go with the staff (Iimori was the best for our family, with a lovely little daycare and kids park and good english ski school). All the slopes were only a 10 minute drive in the morning, and we were taken by ourselves in the minibus of the White Horse- no waiting for public buses for us!
The rooms were really large even by western standards, with all of us in one huge long room on really comfy western beds (comfy being a rarity in Japan!!). My hubby wasn't so sure about not having a shower in the room (there is a bathroom sink, vanity area and toilet), but after the first night we all came to really love the superhot onsen baths downstairs- (when in Japan...!). Nothing like a soak after a freezing day out on the slopes. The restaurant in the hotel was really convenient and good value for money for nights when we didn't feel up to taking the family down the road to the local restaurants. There is plenty of little places to eat only a minute's walk away. Serving traditional Japanese in tiny little buildings (quaint!), they were a highlight of the trip. During the snow season you need to be organised though and ask the staff to book them for you a night in advance. There is a cozy bar at the white horse for a few drinks before and after dinner. Everyone including the staff are so friendly it was such a great relaxed and homely place. There was only a couple of other families staying at the hotel when we were there, and all the kids (and adults!) got on well. There is a playroom downstairs that my four year old loved (along with playing with Tony's 5 year old daughter) as it had a real piano and bongo drums for the kids to let loose on!
I loved the cooked breakfasts, with our morning tea and coffee served up as we like it by memory from the staff each morning! We were lucky enough to see the village transform from pretty sparse snow/bare ground to two feet of snow in just two nights!

I would definitely love to go back and stay there again with my family and would highly recommend it. Talking to some other visitors on the trip home who stayed in self-contained accommodation in the same village, our experience was soooo much better- they got annoyed with catching the bus, didn't have local daily advice as where to eat, which slopes to take on, conditions, places to go etc like we had every day. For these reasons alone I think the White Horse is great value for money and the service is fantastic.

To get to the village from Tokyo, we caught the Asuza directly from Shinjuku Station (once a day 7.30am departure). It took about 4 hours, but it was direct with limited stops. Nothing like relaxing trip in the comfy train and enjoying the scenery.
On the way home we took a bus from Hakuba Visitor Centre to Nagano Station (1 hr drive) and caught the Shinkansen (just over an hour). It was quicker, but more expensive.

The White Horse felt like home straight away, and Tony and his crew felt like family. Homely and spacious rooms, free wi-fi, a lovely bar to enjoy some well-selected apres-ski wines, top-shelf spirits and snacks, a hearty breakfast every morning, and an authentic onsen experience. Also so many restaurants and bars, and ski hire shops within a 2-min walk. Best of all though was the fantastic personalised service. The guys drove us to any part of the mountain we wanted to go to, any time, and spared nothing of their advice and expertise on all things Japan. I can't wait to go back.

Room tip: Our room was just next to the bar! Very handy ;-)

Stayed with family for two weeks. Perfect location to wander around Echoland. Excellent service to and from whichever mountain we chose to ski at. Rooms were much more spacious than what I expected. Thank you Tony and team. Will return for sure. Great holiday!
