Hakuba House
Reviewed March 15, 2012

We stayed here for the weekend and Hakuba House had it all, and if it didn't it was pretty close. Enough activities with pool table and games and bar to keep you busy while my friends were getting ready. You can snowboard down the hill to the lift and come off the hill just the same. A dry room downstairs for your stuff after a hard day of powder and moguls. There is a wicked onsen next door that was just beautiful. Picked up and showed around by Grant. "Thanks for that." The guys and I were thinking that this would be an awesome yearly escape for the boys. Will come again next year, if not earlier.

Room Tip: Second floor may be a bit quieter than the first.

We stayed at Hakuba House in February 2012. A great place to stay for anyone, friends, families with kids, couples, singles..The staff, James, Sophia, Ashley and japanese girl Tomoki made our time in Hakuba to one of our highlights during our trip in Japan; told us everything worth knowing about the Hakuba area, made dinner reservations, booked us in for ski lessons, drove us around town, helped us to get ski gear etc... Never any problems, always smiling and helpful! They truly made us feel just like home!
The fields are literally right outside your front door and you can ski all the way back to the lodge which is great, although it's a bit of a hassle to get to the village, train station, supermarkets.. Very clean everywhere and the lodge has a great atmosphere which made up for the rooms that are very basic. Other than that, again, great place and fantastic staff!

I can't rate Hakuba House highly enough. The accomodation is in a great location just a short walk/ski away from the Happo One lifts, which then lead you to a great ski area. But location aside, it is the staff and comforts that hakuba house offer that really make the stay. Nothing is too much for Grant and the team. They will drive you to restaurants, book ski lessons and onsens, even play pool with you! Happy hour is perfectly timed for your post-ski tipple and the rooms are clean, comfortable and warm.

The skiing in Japan is brilliant, but the trip was really topped off by staying here! Go!

The friendly staff give Hakuba House a great vibe - from single malt expert James behind the bar to ski technician Sophia, overseen by the all knowledgable Grant-o-san. Caters to everyone, from families to large groups of aussie snowboarders to solo travellers to hard core backcountry Finns, and everyone having a fantastic time together. There's a big drying room, bar, pool table, tv, dvds, x-box, free internet, books and ski magazines - everything you need. The food is also excellent and ample after a long day in deep powder, or they will drop you off at dinner (the restaurants in Hakuba are really good). Ski to the lifts at Happo One and ski home through the trees. What more could you ask for?

New owner manager Grant with his staff James and Sophia made us feel very welcome and comfortable in our first stay in a ski lodge. Our 8year old grand daughter was also made to feel comfortable.
The meals were good and the bar has a good atmosphere. They have good contacts for ski lessons and equipment hire which we took advantage of.

A true "home away from home".

Hakuba house was wonderful, Mick and Sarah were great hosts, providing advice on ski areas and how to get around ski fields, and advice on local resturants/ onsens etc when not on the snow, really accommodating hosts... Hakuba House really does have a warm and friendly feeling and also is quite enough to retreat and relax at the end of the day :)

We spent 15 nights/days at Hakuba House from 22 Dec 2010 to 6 Jan 2011and could not be happier with our choice. In fact I shed a tear (several actually) when we had to leave. That is how wonderful your hosts Sarah and Mick are. They make you feel special and go out of their way to ensure your stay is perfect. Simply the best hosts you could possibly ask for. Hakuba house has a warm and personable vibe and is suited to young and old alike. The rooms are warm and spacious, beds are sooooooooo comfortable and ensuite bathroom complete with bath for a soak after a day on the slopes or book the outdoor onsen up the road for a special relax, soak and unwind. Mick and Sarah can assist you with lift tickets, dinner reservations, hire equipment, tours, special requests are not a problem. The bar area is a great place to relax with a drink and chat to other guests. Breakfast is provided daily and includes the best freshest home baked bread, cereals, fruits, juices and a daily changing hot dish. In-house dining is offered several nights per week and is a real yummy option to dining out every night. There is a frdige in the dining room for guests use. Snow sking in Hakuba is AWESOME. I am so glad after all my research into skiing in Japan that 1. I chose HAkuba as our destination and 2. I chose Hakuba House for our accommodation. We will return Christmas 2011. Can't wait - so excited already!!! PS - photo dates are all wrong as have not mastered that function on my two cameras unfortunately.
