on a recent holiday to Japan, we wanted a few days in the mountains, away from the cities and we picked the Ridge from its website and reviews we read. It is wonderful - modern and recently refurbished. At the low point in the season, we were the only guests for a couple of days and it felt like we had our own personal butler, waiter, maid and chef. The rooms are just fantastic, the location is wonderful and the manager Chris excelled in his efforts to make us feel at home, including ferrying us around when we needed something. We ate in the restaurant on two evenings and it was superb. It certainly wasn't cheap but I can't recommend this lovely modern hotel enough for a great break.

I stayed at the Hakuba Hana Hotel for 12 days in January this year. Getting there was easy via the Bullet train from Tokyo. Their recent renovations provided very comfortable and modern accommodation. The bed was king size with lots of great pillows, which was very welcoming after a hard day on the slopes, and each morning I awoke to great views of the ski slopes from my hotel room. The public spaces were always warm and the lounge bar provided a luxurious space to enjoy a few drinks and snacks with new friends. The restaurant also had a nice outlook and provided good hearty western style meals. Staff were always really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The hotel’s shuttle service was a huge help and provided regular trips to the shops and restaurants. The drying room and ski facilities in the basement were brilliant, and it was an easy 5 minute walk to the bottom of the main Happo One chair lift.

The main chair lift was also where the Evergreen Ski School was, who provided my snowboard lessons. They even collect me from opposite the hotel each morning, which is also where the shuttles for the other ski fields depart from. The snow was just incredible - amazing deep powder snow!! It wasn’t that busy on the slopes because there were so many runs available – plus the lift passes are inexpensive. They cater for all capabilities too – i went from beginner to advanced in a matter of days. Even when i fell over, the snow was soft. It’s hard to describe how amazing it is to snowboard through knee deep powder snow!! Incredible!!

There was an indoor / outdoor Onsen about 50m walk across the road. Very convenient, and quite a unique experience. It wasn’t even that cold at Hakuba – really quite mild at just below zero.

Such a memorable trip and excellent accomodation. It felt like home!! I’ve just booked again for next season! Noted they have renamed the hotel to The Ridge.

We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights. We arrived at the hotel on the first night around 10 pm, directly from the airport and were informed that the kitchen was closed and there was no food available. We were all quite disappointed because we were all hungry, after travelling for more than 10 hours (flight plus bus) without any decent food. No offer from the hotel to take us to a convenience store to at least get some instant noodles and there are no store within walkable distance.

Hotel is quite far away from the lift. Wouldn't try walking esp when you have to carry your ski. But then the hotel wouldn't take you to the lift, even though it was only 5 min drive away........ that was quite frustrating.

We wanted clean towel after the 2nd night but we never got it.
We wanted the toilet fan to be fixed because freezing cold air was blowing into the bathroom but it was only fixed on the last night.
Everytime we called the rececption, there's no one to pick up the phone.
We wanted to go to the super market to grab food and was told that we only have 10 min and the super market is HUGH and it's not a supermarket that we have been to so we were racing against time to search for food we need to cook our dinner. Luckily we had 8 people and so each got assigned to buy one dish and we managed.

The complimentary dinner was for main course only and the steak we ordered were hardly chewable. If we knew that's the quality of the food, we would have tried a restaurant in the neighbourhood.

The drying room was downstaris in the basement. Going there each afternoon after a whole day of skiing was tiring!!! Oh, and in the morning, when you have to rush out to catch the bus in the nearby bus stop (which is only available every 40 min?), you would hate the stairs.

Yes, the hotel is beautiful. But I would not come back again because of the price and the service. We moved to another Japanese hotel afterwards and the service was much more attentive and the hotel owner took us to and from the lift each morning and afternoon........ had a much much better time and we only paid 1/3 of what it costed to stay in Hana hotel!!!!

Thank you for your review of the Hakuba Hana Hotel.

We are sincerely sorry to read of your disappointments with our service and amenities, as we certainly pride ourselves on both. Therefore, we would like to address your comments.

Our restaurant is inline with most other local restaurants and does not take food orders after 9pm, unless we are notified of a late request. We would have been more than happy to have provided you with meals had we known in advance.

The hotel is a very easy 5 minute walk to the main chairlift at Happo One. The few hotels that offer their guests a shuttle service to and from the chair lifts are not in walking distance. We do not advertise this service due to our close proximity, however, we are always happy to assist families with young kids.

The issue you mentioned was not actually the toilet fan. One of your party pressed a button that was clearly marked ‘please do not touch – emergency only’ which opened up a small emergency vent in the bathroom roof. This had already been reset during your stay by housekeeping.

We offer a free shuttle service to the supermarket every day at 4pm for all our guests. There is usually quite a few people to accommodate each trip and all guests are allowed as much time as needed. The driver also offers their service in locating required items. Your party was never rushed, however the other guests mentioned that they only required 10-15mins to grab what they required.

We understand skiing is a tiring sport and our drying room is conveniently located in the basement with a lift to the floors above after a hard day on the slopes. The shuttles to other ski fields only depart from across the road every 20 – 40 mins and we provide a timetable at front desk.

We are happy to hear you found our hotel to be beautiful, thank you. And hope you had an enjoyable time in Hakuba.

The hotel lovely, it is well run by friendly Aussies, Michelle was particuarly friendly and hard working! The rooms are comfortable, large and well appointed, and even have some English language TV channels. The bar has an open fire and the restaurant is good, although service is a little slow at times. It was my daughters birthday when we were there and the chef did a great job satisfying her request for a birthday crepe, complete with bithday message in chocolate. The kids loved the games room, it has a Wii and an Xbox as well as TV and a selection of videos. One rainy day the kids asked for a deck of cards, they didn't have any on hand but Michelle delivered a deck to our room an hour later. There is a computer room with high speed internet. The drying room and ski storage areas are roomy and well laid out. Subsequently my brother in law stayed with his kids in a room and my business partner stayed with his extended family in the apartments and they all enjoyed the Hakuba Hana.

I travelled with a group of 7 friends and we loved every moment of our stay! The staff made us feel very welcome (lazy mornings spent sprawled on the couches, afternoons in the bar!) You can see Happo ski lifts from the lounge, so you can laze around eating the included buffet breakfast (really good!) and watch for the first lifts to start churning.

The hotel is beautifully decorated, and the 4 bedroom apartment we stayed in was very spacious, and had everything we needed: 2 bathrooms, 2 toilets, kitchen, lounge, dining table and sleeps 8 comfortably.

The games room with wii and x-box was good after a day on the slopes (2 minute walk to Happo and the bus stop to all other mountains is literally at the end of the driveway!).

Best of all the staff are lovely, always there to help and are a great source of information on places to eat, drink, onsens etc.

We'll definitely be heading back :)

The Hotel has a small personal staff to meet your every needs. (and they did) The size of this newly renovated Hotel is "Perfect" for peace and much needed relaxation after skiing. At first impressions, the staff looked a little understaffed (busy season) but after finishing our stay of 6 nights they managed with flying colors. If there were any inconveniences, we don't remember any. The dinner menu was on the "Western side", which was (as an American living in Hong Kong) a pleasant surprise. There is plenty of local food within walking distance so please don't change your menu HHH. Hakuba Hana Hotel, you have to put that Tuna Appetizer on your Main Dish Menu... AWSOME!!! Feel free to mingle in the fireplace lounge sipping on a glass of Champagne in your comfy clothes... no worries at the Hakuba Hana. With the small staff, it was easy to get to know everyone and should problems arise, (and they did) they were more than willing to help. Thanks, Michelle, Kim & Matt to name a few. If we're in Hong Kong next year, we'll be back,,, "for that Tuna Fillet" ;-)

Skiing Happo One Mountain was like owning your personal resort during Monday thru Friday. Stay away on the weekends, very crowded!
"Highly recommend flying in on a Sunday and departing on a Saturday"

There are plenty of other resorts to ski but we loved the terrain and length of trails at Happo One so we never left... even with multiple resort lift tickets.

It's beautiful, modern, comfy, luxurious. So it fitted the price. However the service is horrible. We (family with 2 kids) booked with friends (also family with 2 kids) 2 two-bedroom apartments. We were told that these were not available and they offered us the 4 BDR de luxe apartment for the same price. We accepted this. However, when we wanted a confirmation, we were told that something went wrong with the booking and if we were OK with a 3 BDR apartment with an adjacent separate BDR. We accepted this, with the promise that this extra bedroom would be next to the apartment. When we arrived the extra BDR was on a different floor. This of course is unacceptable with small children. And the 3 BDR apartment turned out to be a 2 BDR appt. This we were not told about. They just brought us to the apartment and pretended nothing was wrong. So now we had a 4 person apartment for 8 people. The kitchen only had 2 burners. We asked for extra plates/cutlery but ended up fetching this ourselves from the kitchen. The 1st night we were offered a dinner in the restaurant as a compensation. However it turned out to be only for the main course. Not for a starter or a drink. The staff is generally moody as if we were a burden instead of a guest.
As for the apartments, however nice they are, it would be nice if they had been cleaned. The beds were made, but the floor not even vacuumed, let alone the cups or dishes cleaned.
We had one small towel and no wash cloth for 2 adults, and no spare toilet paper.
After 2 days we asked if the apartment could get a vacuum clean. They did, but then the bedrooms didn't. The wonderful breakfast buffet from the website, didn't have any fresh fruit and only had white bread. So in general, get a new staff and a new attitude and it could be a really nice place.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to review Hakuba Hana Hotel. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the comfort of our luxurious modern hotel and apartments over the weekend.
There was a mix up with your original booking and once again our sincerest apologies regarding this. We were pleased that your family and friends accepted the other option of a three bedroom apartment with a hotel room across the hall which sleeps 8 people in total. The reason the new configuration was not mentioned to yourself on check in, was that it was previously discussed with your travelling companion earlier and he approved the changes.
We were delighted to hear that your group settled into the three bedroom apartment and the hotel room, as when the four bedroom apartment became available the following day it was immediately offered to you but you declined.
The bedding configuration included a total of 6 beds in the apartment and one king size bed in the adjacent hotel room.
I am sorry about the misunderstanding re. the complimentary dinner; as it was explained to a person in your group that a main meal was on offer. I do hope you enjoyed your meal in The Ridge Restaurant.
Hakuba Hana Hotel and Apartments has a very high standard with housekeeping and we pride ourselves on our cleanliness. The apartments are self contained, dishwashers are provided along with dishwasher tablets for your convenience. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave and convection oven, along with an induction cook top and I am sorry you found these insufficient.
Our buffet has a variety of foods on rotation to satisfy as many requirements as possible.
Our guest service levels are of the utmost importance to us as we always endeavor to exceed our guests’ expectations.
We have welcomed hundreds of guests during this fantastic season and look forward to many more. I regret your stay did not meet your expectations and hope for the opportunity to welcome you back to surpass them.
