Bears Den Mountain Lodge
Reviewed March 25, 2013

The Bears Den is the place to go in Hakuba if you want peace n quite but close to the mountain base with 5 star luxury. An easy 300m walk up and warm up to the chair lift and can ski back 20m from the door! Massive drying room to hang your gear and store your boards and a hot tub at the end of the day sets the scene! Lesley's house always gives you that home away from home feel and is the most modern place in Goryu by far. Value for money is unreal and with lift tickets only $50 and powder to your knees why would you want to be anywhere else??

Room Tip: All rooms are the same with massive area compared to usual "Japanese size" and heated floo...

We stayed at Bears Den in January 2012. It was our first trip to Japan to ski and Lesley's attentive service is really what made the trip for us. From the first email contact thru to the final lift to the bus stop Lesley was always there to make our holiday fun and easy. A few examples of this are; Lesley happily picked up some snacks at the supermarket for the kids, which certainly gave me peace of mind knowing that I had food for them whenever needed. After skiing, we enjoyed walking down the hill past the temple and thru the pine trees to get to the local Onsen - a picturesque walk that we loved. Lesley was always available to pick us up after our soak so as to not spoil the relaxation! The dinners at the Den were fun, relaxed and with great food. It was always clear which nights would be catered for in the Den and which would be nights when we would go out. No surprises. On the nights that we ate out, Lesley was there to guide us and take us if necessary. I admired her ability to be there when you needed her yet also let you feel like her house is your house

During our stay Lesley was experiencing personal upheaval. She was up front about this when we arrived, just in case she could not live up to her normal standards of hospitality. However not once did her personal life impede her ability to look after her guests. I am guessing that Travelhoglet visited thru the same period as us. Travelhoglet refers to the host as He. I think it is important to point out that his 2 star review is not referring to Lesley who is the Hostess who now runs Bears Den solo. We experienced lovely Japanese hospitality in Hakuba as well as the outstanding, relaxed and comfortable service from Bears Den. At $400 a night for a family of 4 we can't recommend it more. In fact we are headed back in January 2013.

The actual lodge and rooms are well explained in other reviews and I would agree with them. In brief it is clean, comfortable, cozy, sociable and the icing on the cake - a lovely outdoor hot tub. Can't recommend it enough.

We stayed at Bears den last january for our 1st Japanese ski trip. 2 families with a total of 5 kids under 10 years in tow. It was easy trip via train and bus from tokyo. Lesley made us all feel at home and organised the details well such as Pick-ups, drop offs, ski hire, lessons, pharmacy run etc....Had such a great holiday we are going back again this january 2013 with 3 families!!!
Lesley has similarly helpful with Bookings and other japan etc info via email. The accomodation was modern and especially spacious for Japan which makes everyone feel at home. Definitely recommend for an easy relaxing ski holiday.

Bears Den a little gem.
We liked it that much we extended our stay and went back for seconds. Going back for another serve March 2013
My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at the Bears Den in Feb/March 2011 after being referred on by some friends of ours who had stayed there previously. Neither my wife nor I are usually lodge people usually preferring the hotel or apartment to lodge style cohabitation. We planned to stay seven nights at the Bears Den and then move up the valley to Wadano into a Hotel for another seven nights as our fallback plan and head home. Well after a week in the Den we where hooked, we changed our flights and went back and stayed another five nights.
Its not on the main street so if you didn't know it was there’s probably a good chance you would never find it, Its so quite you can hear the snow fall at night. But 10 mins walk down a very picturesque street are some bars and some fantastic food and shuttle bus to Echoland and the magical slopes of Goryu/47. Tracks and Canada Tei are a must visit. Kamishiro station is 10 mins walk so a trip to Matsumoto is really easy. After a bit of local guidance by Lesley we even worked out how to ski virtually to the door from Goryu. Thanks Les.
I don't know if it was a combination of the skiing, food and sake but some of the best nights sleep I ever had where in the beds at the Den. Oh so comfy. The hot waters hot and there’s plenty of it. There’s a small bar upstairs but mostly it was a few after ski drinks and off into the night to see what we can find. The Japanese chef catered two meals for the lodge one Italian inspired the other home style Japanese, both exceptional in quality and amount. The property was recently built and extremely well fitted out, it looks western on the outside but the Japanese influenced timber beam work up stairs in the common area give it a really warm earthy feel. It certainly reflects the commitment of the owners to provide a quality experience. Oh did I mention the beds.
We put that to the test somewhat by deciding to recommit our marriage vows to each other in the snow and in traditional attire. Lesley we cant thank you enough it was such an incredible experience it certainly bonded us with Hakuba, and the pictures are amazing. We can’t wait to get back home to Goryu and the Bears Den.

Would we go back? We never wanted to leave.

We stayed here during the ski season, great location close to the slopes and although there is no onsen at the lodge there are plenty of onsens closeby. The rooms were very clean and roomy and the room was made up each day by the time we got back in the afternoon. There is a bar upstairs where you can hangout and have a drink and enjoy the wonderful views over the mountains. Every morning you will get breakfast including eggs and toast if you want it or cereal with coffee. After you will be taken to the ski lifts and the hosts had information regarding rental gear, restaurants nearby etc.

On the downside, note that dinner was not served everyday contrary to what we understood from the website. On a couple of nights our host said he would be going out that night so there would be no dinner. This was not a big deal since there are restaurants within 10-15 min walk away but a little annoying when you find out last minute you need to fend for yourself. However, on a couple of nights when the our host went out for dinner he also closed the bar, switched off all but one of the lights. So as it was only 7pm we just finished up our glasses of wine and wondered down to the bar down the road. This didn't ruin our stay but we really appreciate the hospitality we received at other Japanese hotels in the area. The service here just isn't up to par.

Still, would recommend hakuba to anyone as you are almost guaranteed some good snowfall. However if visiting Japan for the first time, would recommend staying at a Japanese b&b style minshuku or ryokan for some Japanese hospitality. For over AUD 300 per night we didn't think the bears den was value for money.

This was my first time staying at the Bears Den and I‘ll definitely be back. I really didn’t want to leave what had become my little haven. It’s in a perfect location nestled amongst the trees and within easy access to the ski hill (Goryu), local restaurants and bus/train station.

The lodge is very spacious and modern, with a lovely big dining area that has wonderful mountain views. It makes for a great area to chat with other guests over breakfast or just relax with a drink after a day on the slopes. The rooms are a good size and very comfortable, big enough to even do a yoga session in the room! They are also cleaned on a regular basis during your stay.

Lesley and Riley really made me feel at home. Lesley is a wonderful host, offering a professional and friendly service at the lodge. From sharing her local knowledge to dropping off guests at the ski hill, nothing is a problem. She also makes a delicious full breakfast, make sure you try the poached eggs!

I would highly recommend the Bears Den to anyone travelling to Hakuba. It caters for families, groups, singles or just anyone looking for a warm, friendly place to stay. I can see why there are so many guests that keep coming back here. Thank you for helping to make my experience in Japan an amazing one, see you again soon!

From when we first booked to stay at Bears Den -on a friends recommendation. Lesley went above and beyond what was expected of her. She sorted our botched money transfer, she picked us up from the bus stop, gave us tips on the various mountains and runs. She was always ready to give us a lift to the slopes. .

Bears Den is right in the centre of some great restaurants and a 5 minute walk to the base of Goryu (or a short board from the village) This is definitely a luxury lodge with heated floors (so amazing after freezing temperatures of -15 on the slopes) a bar, and a spa! Add incredible snow and I feel like I am in heaven!

Lesley thanks for the Jager shots after a tough day of boarding and for making our stay at Bears Den amazing, we'll definitely be back.
