“I WANT TO BE BACK AT PENKE!!!!!!!!!!”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Four of us (two couples) spent 10 nights at the Penke Panke Lodge mid feb 2013 after spending 4 nights at Seventh Heaven (another great lodge in Hakuba) and had an absolutely amazing time!!!

After seeing all the reviews on tripadvisor and the great location of the place we thought it would be a cool place to stay, but once we got there we realised that Penke well exceeded any expectations we had!!!!!

The first thing we noticed is how close the lodge is from the sakka lift in happoone! Happone is Hakuba's biggest resort and is an amazing place for powder and tree runs, we had alot of fun boarding there. Turns out the lodge is only 200m from the sakka lift which barely makes for a 2 minute walk. In fact when its quiet enough and you are out the front of the lodge during the day you can hear the sound that the sakka lift emits telling you to hop on to the chair lift! Sakka lift also has a bus stop in which you can catch a bus to almost anywhere in hakuba and the many ski resorts. There is also a convient store across the road which offeres food, drinks and also gifts to take back to loved ones.

The Penke Panke Lodge itself is such a cool and relaxing place and is great value for money for those looking for a snow holiday in hakuba. Its has two great drying rooms a communal kitchen dinning and living room where most relax and socialise when not on the mountain! The lodge has such a great feeling to it that we instantly felt at home and quickly made friends with all that stayed there and the staff.

The owner Justin and the staff there were all so helpful and alot of fun to be around and realy made our trip!!!!! from anything we needed organised or for ANY place we need to be driven to Justin and the staff bent over backwards to make it happen, while at the same time being super relaxed. Justin and the staff are so nice and when they aren't working socialise with all the guest at the lodge, the bar and even on the mountain! really made for a fun trip! Justin and the staff also do some trips to Cortina when the conditions are good which saves you getting a bus or paying for a taxi, and means you can get to Cortina nice and early for first tracks!

The lodge has a cool look inside and out as Justin has done a good job to make it a nice place to be! The Penke Bar was also a winner in our books as we spent most nights there for drinks and dinner. The food at the Penke bar was awesome, with a great menu and the chiefs exceeding our expectations every time!!

Every morning breakfast is at the bar and offeres tasty hot and cold food. The fun atmosphere at the bar, the themed nights and the live music makes you never want to go to bed! I highly recommend visiting the Penke Bar atleast once even if you're not staying at the Penke Panke lodge!!! But when we wanted a chilled night we just relaxed in the lodge's living room with staff and other guests and still made for great nights!

Although when you want to eat somewhere else the street that Penke Panke is on has many fantastic restaurants to offer. We also had fun setting up and small backyard jib set to play around on from a pervious set up that was in the backyard. The lodge also has clothe washing and drying facilities so you dont have to pack so heavy.

We had a room which had its own toilet, depending on your budget there are rooms with no bathroom, this means using the communal bathrooms which to my surprise is are very nice and extremely clean and have a large hot tub which is kinda cool. Dont worry there are separate male and female bathrooms.

Dave in the rental shop downstairs helped us out with anything we needed even though we brought our own gear, he even gave us snow condition tips and where the best place to snowboard was depending on the condition. There is wifi throughout the lodge and bar, and even a nice gas fireplace outside between the lodge and bar! the living room also offeres heaps of great movie to watch on a big flat screen tv when you feel like relaxing.

Overall Penke Panke really help us to have an amazing trip! i will definitely be back next year and recommend this place to all singles, friends, couples, families or whoever! so thank you to the Penke Panke lodge, the bar and Justin and the staff!!!

Room Tip: Ask justin to match a room to your budget and needs

This is the second time my husband and I have stayed at Penke Panke, and it was even better the second time around. The owner Justin and all the staff were fantastic, welcoming and made our stay one to remember. The added feature - the 'Penke Bar' which included live music every night was awesome! We really had such a fun time, and no doubt - we'll be back again for sure!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near the bar end, as some nights can get noisy.

I stayed here with three friends on the recommendation of a family friend, and it was great! The owner was welcoming and friendly, the staff were all amazing and so was the service. The snowboard hire was cheap and of good quality, and the guy that fitted us out for boots and such was so helpful. The lodge has a communual style living and dining area, with lots of movies and books, which was great for after a day on the slopes. Definitely recommend this place, and even if you can't stay there, pop into Penke bar, cheap drinks, good food, amazing people and themed nights! Had a blast, will definitely be staying there again :)

Room Tip: It should probably be noted that quiet a few rooms don't have toilets or showers in them, but th...

Penke Panke was like staying at your mother's house but with more beer. We were greeted like the staff were our old friends. Free wi-fi throughout (including the bar) plus the common room had plenty of space to hang out and relax after a day on the slopes (lots of DVD's, books, tv, guitar, cosy couches). We were able to organise cheap & good-quality rental gear through Penke and had loads of help sizing everything up and the staff were more than happy to suggest great local, authentic restaurants and onsens. They even had regular car runs to the ATM, onsens, supermarkets and would drop you off almost anywhere you liked if you asked :) The cosy bar next door had cheap drinks, a great lunch/dinner menu and regular themed nights. Would recommend to anyone heading to Hakuba - groups, solo travelers, families, and it's a 3 minute walk to one of the lifts of Happo-one.. thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

If you're going to Hakuba, go to Penke Panke. Either stay there or visit the best bar in the area. These guys have it dialled. Great food, great nightlife/live music at the bar, and a good vibe amongst all staff and guests. Try the 'After Dinner Mint' cocktail, and the Pork Belly on the menu.

The bar/restaurant is separate to the accomodation so there are no late night noise issues if you need to get some rest for the next days adventures. Whether you are there for breakfast, lunch, Apres', or all night long, this is the place for you.

The staff were all lovely. Japanese, Australian, Scottish, and Irish folk...all great skiers and boarders, and happy to help guests wherever they are needed.

I was lucky enough to be shown the best parts of Happo mountain on separate occasions with a number of the staff!

Enjoy

My girlfriend and I recently stayed at Penke Panke Lodge and had the best time imaginable. It was recommended to us by a friend and Penke lived up to that recommendation and the other reviews on Tripadvisor! We stayed in a Queen Room with en-suite and it was clean, quiet, warm and very comfortable. The proximity of Penke to the Happo-one lifts is also a massive advantage. It is only a very short walk to the Sakka Lifts, and if you want to visit other mountains there is also a bus stop there. There was a wide variety of guests staying whilst we were there from singles, couples, families and small groups. The Penke Bar that is next door was the perfect place to have an evening drink and provided a cool atmosphere for the everyone with the live music that was on each night.

The previous reviews are spot on about the staff. Justin and his team cannot do enough to help out and made our stay so easy. Whether it was booking us dinner and tours, to the daily runs they do to the ATM's/Supermarket/Onsens to organizing the most suitable lift tickets the staff could not be faulted. If like us you want to eat out, the street that Penke Panke is on has quite a few places to eat (Mimasakatei was our pick, the Shabu-Shabu was awesome) or you can eat at the Penke Bar which does excellent food also! If you prefer to cook for yourself, there was a massive share kitchen that seem to be well utilized.

Overall the lodge seemed to cater for many walks of life and suited our stay perfectly. We couldn't fault it and already looking and next at seasons trip!

We stayed here just before the start of the official season so there were a few little 'startup' issues with breakfasts etc. However, the staff went out of their way to do anything they could to help out - lent me some boots, rented us (at a REALLY cheap price) snow goggles because we had forgotten to get them from the ski hire place, drove us anywhere we wanted to go at any time and were generally wonderful!
However, the actual accommodation is a little 'eclectic' to put it politely so if you like your 5-star modern hotels, this place is not for you! I also found that I got terrible hayfever every time I walked into our rooms so there were probably some mould/fungus issues somewhere.
But these were minor gripes and more than overcome by the unbelievable service and friendliness of the staff.
