“February 2013 at Hakuba Meteor Pension”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Hakuba, this is it. What a fantastic find, run by a local man, Tetsu, and his wife for the last 30 years, and situated in Echoland between the ski areas of Hakuba 47 and Happo One. Traditional Japanese accommodation including Japanese bathrooms, loft style comfortable bedrooms, and breakfast if required. Situated within easy walking distance of local bars and restaurants. The staff and family go out of their way to help, language barriers are easily overcome, and they will run you to local ski resorts/supermarkets etc. We're so glad we chose the Meteor to stay in, a fantastic start to our first trip to Japan.

We had a great time staying at the meteor for 5 days of snowboarding in Hakuba. It's located in Echoland just off the main street which has plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. There is also a bus stop right outside which you can use for free access to the mountains.

The staff at the Meteor go out of their way to help you with almost anything. They have their own bus and will run you to the suprmarket to stock up and also have daily runs to a couple of the mountains. Overall a great place to stay for the price with a sweet location, comfortable rooms and wicked staff. Will be back.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Meteor Pension - the family who run it are very friendly and keen to help, and any language difficulties were easily overcome. The location is great, in Echoland - lots of restaurants nearby, easy access to onsens, and good transport options for getting to most of the resorts. The continental breakfast was good value (the cooked breakfast didn't look that great). Our room wasn't huge but was well heated (apart from the bathroom, which was arctic!) and comfortable. We saw one of the rooms at the next-door Meteor Lodge - the beds are bigger and the room a bit bigger, but there didn't seem a huge difference. Overall, it was a really nice place to stay and seemed like really good value. We'll definitely stay there again if we return to Hakuba.

As a returning guest for many years to Meteor , I have found the accomadation very good for this price range. With this Family run Lodge ,the customer service is excellent, with Tetsu, Madori and staff going the extra yards to meet their guests requirements. Its situated in an excellent part of Ecoland close to the main street , with a nightly run shuttle bus to traditional japanese onsens,
I would highly recommend Meteor for your next ski trip to beautiful Hakuba!

Nice familiar pension in heart of Echoland. Bus stop for all Hakuba slopes is just 3 minutes walk. Restaurants, bar and shops in walking distance.
Rooms clean, big with private bathroom. in the entrance 2 sofas to take rest, see internet or chat.
Owners can take you to the center to supermarket or to any other place if you ask.
Pension also offer free shuttle to Happo One slopes in the morning.
Definately recommended!

This review has to be read in the context of a city folk who lived her entire life in Singapore, a few steps north of the equator.
Sorry Tetsu that it took me a year to write this review. in this time, my sister has returned in summer, and more friends have found their way to Meteor on our recommendation.
During this past year, a lot has been written about Tetsu, wife, son and the superb hospitality. And it is all true.
Now about the lodge, Tetsu spent two years building the lodge with materials imported from Canada, the result is a cosy two sty lodge with a fully equipped kitchen, a long table with a flat screen TV huddling next to a fireplace. Putting together a meal at the kitchen is a real delight with the glass windows and the wonderful view. From the living area, to catch the rising sun cast a colored hue on the majestic alps is in itself a wonderful treat.
We travelled in a group of 13, with ages ranging from 10 to 78. The keen skiers enjoyed the close proximity to the ski slopes, the bus stop was literally at our door step. Next to Meteor are many restaurants and cafes less than 5 minutes walk away. Yet, not once did we lose that peaceful feeling surrounding Meteor.
All in all, we enjoyed every minute of staying at the Lodge. The only regret is that it wasn't long enough.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floor has a higher ceiling, and will require longer heating time. However they h...
