Higashikawa is a 30 - 35 minute drive from the main city of Asahikawa on icy winter roads. It is a laid back and pretty town with cute coffee shops a photo gallery with an annual photo contest and a really lovely yuki matsuri (snow festival). Canmore Ski village is no problem to find if you are using an iPhone with a map application.
I am a beginner snowboarder and went with my husband who is intermediate-advanced and a friend who was snowboarding for the first time.
It was really reasonable to buy a night pass at ￥1000 per person. You can hire ski gear there too although I am not sure of the prices. The reception counter is small and has ladies and mens toilets on the same floor. Above the reception is the restaurant. We did not eat there but it looked nice enough.
There are only ski lifts, not gondolas. I would say that the slope is not appropriate for a first time snowboarder but that at the bottom of the slope there is a nice little portion of the slope to practise the basics.
The slope is perfect for the more confident beginner snowboarders and a breeze for the intermediate to advanced. There did not seem to be much of in the way of trees and off piste areas for the adventurous but for a night out with friends or a day with the family I think this is a lovely slope and I hope to go again very soon.
