The hotel is a bit rundown, but the onsen and views from the rooms are great. Tenninkaku is the oldest onsen in the Tenninkyo area and is right next to the walkway which leads to the scenic waterfall in the gorge, best seen in the autumn with the accompanying red and yellow hues. The staff were helpful and attentive, and we, a group of three women, had a very relaxing stay.
During our stay we had a buffet dinner which was mediocre - not terrible, but not brilliant either. Our Japanese-style room was clean and offered good views of the river. The highlight of the stay, for women in particular, is the onsen. Usually reserved for men, the beautiful rotemburo with views of the forest, mountain and river is available for women only between 2am and 9am in the morning, which means that women can only experience it if they are overnighting at the hotel. We surmised that an old ramshackle building above the rotemburo may even have been one of the original bath-houses featured in the interesting black and white photos next to the gift shop.
If you are looking for a luxurious onsen experience this hotel is not for you, but for an affordable stay in a beautiful area Tenninkaku is a good choice.
