I just returned from a 2 week trip to Italy (my first). Part of the trip we stayed in Altamonte at the house of a friend. We did not stay at the hotel but ate there as well as used the pool. For me the stand out was the food. We had a huge lunch of various antipasti dishes. The biggest standout for me? THE BREAD. It was actually a bruschetta but with no toppings, just toasted with olive oil and salt. It was the best bread I've ever had, including the entire trip which included the Amalfi Coast and Rome. I now dream about that bread....

Oh, and the pool was fantastic to cool off in the late afternoon.

We have a house in Sicily and drive the length of Italy regularly. We have been staying at the Barbieri many times. After Rome the country becomes fairly wild and empty and there aren't that many opportunities for a comfortable stay in Southern Italy, however, the Hotel Barbieri is a godsend! Not only is the hotel in a beautiful town, it's in a lovely, quiet position with wonderful views, the rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable. However the most important aspect are the owners and their staff, they could not be more wonderful and genuinely interested in you. This is a family-run hotel and everyone is friendly and smiling and nothing is too much. As we are travelling with four (!) dogs, we feel it is a place which truly welcomes all of us. Our four legged friends aren't just tolerated, they are welcomed. I love the place and we will be back many times over. I must not forget the food, which is excellent! We have had many wonderful lunches and dinners, always fresh, always delicious, served with a smile.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view of the town.

From the moment we arrived and Don Vincenzo greeted us at the entrance, our stay could not have been more perfect. This is a family run hotel, where all the staff go out of their way to help guests. Our room was charming, and although it was at the back if the hotel, the balcony had wonderful views towards the snow capped mountains. The carafe of dessert wine and biscuits which greeted us in our room was a really nice touch. Excellent food and impeccable service. Views from the front of the hotel are breathtaking - across the horseshoe shaped valley to the medieval tumble of buildings which make up Altomonte, a gentle walk away. Perfect for the fireworks display we enjoyed one evening. The sound of cow bells was unexpected - but that was as noisy as it got! I have no hesitation in recommending this gem of an hotel.

After spending more than 30 days traveling the length and breadth of Italy we have to say that the Hotel Barbieri was the best!!! Exceptional service and hospitality, helpful and attentive staff, and outstanding food -- all combined -- the best in Italy!!! Enzo and his family made us welcome and by the end of our week long stay we felt like one of the family -- complete with a tearful goodbye. We were there to research family genealogy and speak little to no Italian -- Emanuela, a staff member, offered and went with us to the church to act as interpreter for us! We celebrated my husband's birthday during our stay and they made him a wonderful birthday cake as a gift from the hotel! We would return in a heartbeat!!!

We have just returned from a tour around southern Italy, and this hotel was by far the best. The 'owner' welcomed us, and he and his family waved goodbye when we left. The staff are very attentive, our room was small but very adequate, there are larger rooms. Nothing is too much trouble for this hotel, we were made to feel very welcome. I would love to go back to this hotel.

We decided to stop over here between Sicily and Sorrento for one night after reading the reviews on trip advisor. We were a bit weary after the drive (and our gps steered us wrong) on arrival we were offered an espresso whilst we completed the check in.

After the day we had, we booked into the restaurant. We were greeted by our waiter Carlo and situated at table, Carlo, a very happy & helpful man, highly recommended a local wine so we started with a 1/2litre.  Very nice.

Looking at the menu, we were considering the menu of the day but Carlo recommended the antipasto of local produce & dishes and that we should consider other courses after we finish with the antipasto.......... we now understand why!

When Carlo came out with a plate of dips/spreads & some toasted bread soaked in olive oil, we thought, this will get us started.
Straight after, he came back with three dishes with mushrooms, artichokes, onions, fried peppers & various other bits.
Then he came back with more plates & then more plates with beans, chic peas, mushrooms prepared different ways, artichokes prepared different ways, cheese, cold meats, peppers, more onions, potatoes..!!!
We the tried the Spaghetti Barbieri; home made spaghetti with tomato sauce that they make themself with basil, butter & cheese.  We only shared a dish but it was heavenly. As we were leaving we were offered a further coffee on the terrace and provided with a gift by one of the siblings that run the hotel (local produce - chillies etc.). It was a fantastic touch and we were very grateful. All in all an exceptional experience and one that I would not hesitate to recommend to others - true Italian/Calabrese hospitality.
