“Gourmet but unpretentiious”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

If you are in the lakes region of Lago Maggiore or Lago d'Orta in the Italian Piedmont (at the foot of the Italian Alps) and looking for refined and authentic cuisine, far removed from tourists and just on the outskirts of an equally authentic village, this restaurant is it. You can't get more honest good food than this. It is family-owned and run: the wife in the kitchen makes her own pasta (exquisite), breadsticks, a cart-full of desserts (wide choice) and invents new dishes continuously. Most of the products she uses (poultry, game, meats, butter, cheese, wild mushrooms "porcini" , chestnuts, etc. when in season) come from the farmers of the village La Zucca is just on the periphery of, or from the "zona, " meaning neighboring villages or very near. The prosciutto is excellent. The number of regional cheeses on the cart surpasses anything I have ever seen, in Italy or even France (where we go to eat just as often as in Italy)!!! And all of them excellent, individually chosen by the owner. The tray of desserts is the same! So, if you have a sweet tooth save some room for her version of tiramisu, luscious chocolate cakes and great variety of creams...The husband also has an excellent choice of Italian wines, reasonably priced (again, many from the region) and the two daughters help provide impeccable and friendly service. The menu changes with the seasons, so I will not describe the succulent meals I have had there, as she rarely repeats them. The location is idyllic: an Italian country home, chalet-like, surrounded by flowers and trees and a view on Lake Orta from the terrace. Whenever we cross the Alps to go to Italy, we can't wait to make our first stop there. Can't recommend this restaurant enough!!! Prepare yourselves for a leisurely and memorable meal:

“Exquisite food in a family run restaurant”
Reviewed August 13, 2011

Finding La Zucca is not easy, you probably get there through word of mouth, most probably if you are visiting Lake Orta.
The restaurant has a homey feeling, with very spacious tables, light woods and pretty fresh flowers. It has been run by the same family from over 50 years. The service is extremely attentive yet very discreet, the Host and his two daughters will be more than happy to explain every single detail regarding their fresh produce and how a single dish is prepared. The starters are excellent, just what you need to warm up to a great dinner, we tried Tortino di porcini, a porcini mushrooms delicious tart with fondue, also the mixed starters platter was delicate and interesting with a different tasting of quite a few vegetables, quail's eggs and a typical anchovies dip. For main course do not miss the Ravioli piemontesi, they are simply fantastic with a three different roast meats filling that will melt in your mouth. The other fresh pastas and pumpkin gnocchi are also excellent. What makes this restaurant so special is neverthless its multiple cheese tray. Every bit of cheese on that tray has a history and normally a very niche producer who has never heard the word "industrial production". It is simply a joy listening to such a detailed explanation of where they all come from and how they are made and stored! Just go for it! Last but not least the desserts. Seasonal fruits purèes all presented in pretty little pots, prunes, apricots, sultanas, all pickled in grappa or moscato wine come in inviting jars, homebaked cakes, buttery biscuits, jars of vanilla custard and fresh cream. Avoid this place if you are on a low calories diet! The wine list provides a nice selection with particular focus on regional and local wines.
