Our visit last night to Lake House Restaurant was a mix of good and bad. This was our first visit since they re-opened after having a fire in the fall. The updated decor was nice, keeping some of the traditional feel, like the wood beams, brick fireplace and panelling, and adding some more modern elements like the lighting, seating and window treatments. The overall feel is still warm and welcoming but cleaner and more modern.

We arrived early as we didn't have a reservation so were hoping for an available table and we were not disappointed, being seated immediately by a very friendly hostess. Unfortunately, the hostess must have neglected to mention to the server that we were in her section as no one came to take our order. Another couple, seated after us about three tables away, had their drinks on the table and their food order taken and still no server had been to our table. The server for that section walked past us and glanced our way several times but never asked if someone had been over to take our order. The hostess also poked her head into the room a few times, but again, never inquired about whether we had been served. My husband finally walked back to the hostess stand after about 20 minutes and asked them to send a server over. The server then came right over to take our order, but did not apologize for the wait. She actually asked if we needed more time. We did not.:) Service from this point on was pleasant and efficient.

We ordered two cocktails and a half litre of wine, bruschetta and scallops to start, beef tenderloin peppercorn farfalle and pasta polo as our main course followed by creme brulee and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Total bill was $135.00.

The bread served before dinner with olive oil and balsamic vinegar is a nice touch but the small rolls were very hard and actually hurt my gums. The bruschetta was tasty but could benefit from a thicker bread as the amount of topping overwhelmed the thin pita it was served on. The scallops were the star of the entire dinner, tasty and tender served with truffled turnip puree, sour cherry, crispy bacon and puff pastry, which sounds like an odd pairing but is delicious. Be aware, however, that there are only two scallops for $16.00 so it is not a dish large enough to share. The main course selections were a disappointment. Both pasta dishes were oversalted, the pasta pollo more so than the beef tenderloin farfalle. Also, on both pasta dishes the sauce was somewhat dry and thick. My husband has had the farfalle on previous visits and this time it was definitely lacking. The creme brulee and sticky toffee pudding were delicious with both of us declaring the pudding the best choice of the two. It would be really great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream served with it.

Service throughout the meal was prompt, the only mis-step at the very end was that our bill and credit card sat on the table for about 10 to 15 minutes before the server came back to take our payment.

Despite the issues with both service and food, we will definitely be back to the Lake House as we always enjoy the ambiance (particularly the view) and appetizers. If you go in the summer, the patio is quite lovely. Some pointers for the staff, who may be new since the closure after the fire, would go a long way to improving the experience along with some attention to detail in the kitchen.

We were there with friends Friday December 27/13. Our friends are regulars but it was a first time experience for us. What a lovely meal. The staff was friendly and attentive. Our waitress Chantelle was helpful With questions we had and made suggestions.
We ordered from the fix price menu. Three of us had salmon and the other person had veal. Our appetizers which were crab cakes and organic green salad. Everything was properly cooked and seasoned. We will definitely come back to this restuarant. It was one of the best meals we have had in a long time!

From the outside it's unprepossessing but inside it's warm, comfortable, a fireplace and the best calamari and pizzas ever. Wine list is extensive yet affordable.

We stopped in on a stormy night and got a table right away. We ordered from the price fixed menu and the portions for the appetizers and mains were very generous. The flavours in the dishes were well balanced. The stormy weather prevented a good view of the lake; but I have dined here before in good weather and I know the view is great in normal conditions. I recommend making reservations because it is normally busy. It is the perfect choice for your special occasions.
