Living in the region for the last 6 years, there are still not many restaurants that have reached my top 10 list, but About Thyme Bistro is definitely on my list.
No fancy hoity-toity chichi. It's simple - Fresh food made from fresh products and friendly host.
Over the last year the service concept changed. Now you put your order in at the kitchen's counter. Don't let this displease you; still they bring the food on your table with a convivial and friendly service.
The menu is a mix of french bistro and N-Am traditionals with an innovative revisited touch: caesar salad with goat cheese and pecan, poutine with duck confit and foie gras sauce (love it), a spiced blueberry ketchup with the duck leg confit, real hand cut fries, home made patés and pickles, the daily specials on the blackboard, etc. All are very yummy.
Pricing - again no chichi, they priced it right. Accept credit/debit.
Wine - No wine list. Though they feature a local winery every month with a red and a white by the glass or btl. You can BYOW. You are in a wine region so do it. Cork fees (they got it right for ON): 1st local btl is free, 2nd local is $5; any other Canadian btl is $10, and $20 for foreign btl.
Only grp of 6 to 14 can reserve (large harvest table). No other reservation and it's always busy. you may have to wait or if the large Harvest table at the back is not reserved; don't hesitate to share it with 'strangers'. You may be sitting next to a local wine maker...
I went there with friends, with family including a 1.5y.o. and 8y.o and couple. With whom ever you are with and however you are hungry; it is definitely worth the stop to enjoy delicious food and wine.
