Whether you are after coffee, brunch, lunch or dinner, Umberto will not disappoint. They do really great simple Italian food, great coffee and have warm and friendly staff. I originally started coming here for breakfast, but recently went along for dinner. Sooooo delicious. The pasta was so homely and tasty. They do a really good gluten free spaghetti too. You wouldn't even know the difference. It's quite a small place, so make sure you book in advance.

We've been to Umberto a number of times and it is always great value. Even mid week the cosy cafe is crowded with locals so booking a table is a good idea. The service is friendly and efficient. The menu is short and supplemented by a few specials. We shared calamari dusted in semolina on a rocket salad for entree. The seafood was cooked well and we enjoyed the dish.
Main courses included a veal ragu with house made pasta (great), and swordfish that my friend raved about. It's licenced and you can't BYO, but the wine list is reasonably priced although I would prefer more options.
My only quibble is the bread which is just average. However, we are never disappointed and are already looking forward to another visit soon.

This busy family-run place was our local cafe for a while and is a real gem. The brekky menu is not extensive but all the options are top-notch, though a touch on the oily side with a few of them, if that kind of thing puts you off - I'm okay with it if it suits the meal, and for me it does.
The dinner is also really good, with good wines to match. Simple Italian cuisine executed excellently and with love.
The service is fantastic and warm and friendly, and the ambience is lively but relaxed.
The courtyard is really nice on a warm day for brekky too.

Umberto's is our local favourite and we have been going here for two years. Marco and his friendly team offer a concise, consistent and very genuine menu of Italian comfort food in a friendly, bustling atmosphere. Appetisers include a great mixed bruschetta and salumi platter. The penne with funghi and the casarecchi with brocolli are exceptional, but then so are all the pasta options. There are great specials (especially cotoletta Milanese and salt cod in broth). The Tiramisu is a good at it comes. There is a good wine list with some nice Italian wines and beers and some special grappas. Nice touches include home cured olives and delicious bread dribbled with very fine olive oil. At the risk of making it hard to get a table, make the effort to get up to Thornbury and try Umberto's out. You will return I promise you!
