We booked this ryokan with high expectations but was appalled by the unpersonable and cold treatment. We arrived in the morning and found the ryokan easily. The lady (owner) allowed us to put our bags down and gave us a map. Throughout the whole time we interacted with her, she did not smile the slightest and seemed in a hurry to get us out of the ryokan.

Dinner was served in a hurry and robotically by the same lady, again with minimal eye contact or smile. We later found out she also made our beds while we were having dinner. I think she was overworked; manning the whole ryokan herself and serving 6 guests at the same time. While I can understand that she may be tired, but we paid A LOT of money to stay in this ryokan and this was the most pathetic and unfriendly service we received in the whole of Japan. She could have hired help if she is unable to cope but with that sort of price tag, I expect a bit more respect as a guest rather than being made to feel as if we were imposing on her for free.

Will never return!! With so many accomodation in Shirakawago, any option would be better than this unfriendly place.

The room was warm & cozy. We specially chose Koemon as we heard it had electric floor heating so it was a great choice as we never had any problems with the cold in minus degree temperature in Feb.

Food during dinner was plenty & much more than we expected & breakfast was sufficient as well. The owner speaks a little English & is wam & approachable. He goes his way out to ensure guests feel welcomed in his minshuku & goes to great length in describing Shirakawago's history.

If you can come during winter, the scenary is amazing & you will feel like you are in a totally different world from civilisation!

Booking through Japanese Guesthouses website was real easy.

We stayed in Minshuku Koemon and had gotten the room facing the pond/carpark. The place was perfect. The minshuku is in old traditional style with no locks on the door. But it was VERY CLEAN and comfortable. I think it was of an excellent value!

The food was authentic and was rather delicious! the best part was the bath area. At any one time only 2 people can enter and there is also a outdoor bath.

Shirakawago was very packed with tourist in June and we only had the whole place to ourselves at night.

Try to spend a night here. It was absolutely Stunning.

Let me be the first to write a review on Koemon.

I'm surprised that Shirakawa-go is not a crowded place for tourists, apart from a few buses that carry day-tour visitors to the place. after it's dark, and in the mornings, you can virtually take a stroll by yourself, believing that this place is indeed a very quaint and peaceful place to be.

Koemon was the most expensive minshuku in the area as far as I know, at about ~9,400yen per person. but i didn't regret choosing the place, because it is the closest minshuku from the bus stop, and it is beautifully renovated inside the minshuku. the dinner area is big, spacious and cosy, and the rooms are alright.

What really made the place worth its money is probably the private family bathroom, where it looks simple but elegant, and indeed is romantic for a couple to use together. they have a metal tub that you can use to comfortably soak 2 people.

Food is good, but i didn't feel very full.. probably big eaters will have to take note. see my pictures for a better gauge though.
