“Lovely comfortable mountain retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

The institute is quite some distance from the village and at considerable elevation, one needs transportation to get to/from it. By pre-arrangement, I was met at the Shirakawago bus stop to be driven up to the institute. Transportation is available to/from village as needed. My room was spacious with very good amenities. The front desk staff were excellent. The restaurant food was very good and its staff excellent. Free wireless internet connectivity was available in the main building. The mountain setting is splendid, with much snow around when I was there. On my day of departure, my luggage was stored free of charge at the village information office until I was ready to leave on the late afternoon bus. I enjoyed my all too brief stay there.

Stayed on January 2nd, surprisingly full of guests at this place. We arrived relatively late time to check-in- going uphill in the snow without any outside light /ramp was not easy to find this place... (plus, a bit too scary to drive the condition of narrow dual lanes covered with heavy snow and hilly).
But once we got in, the staff welcomed up warmly, very sparkling clean and spacious wooden facility was worth browsing. It's totally a different set up from an ordinary Japanese inn or hotel. Many Eco system information was displayed throughout the lodge, but unfortunately, everything was written in Japanese...
We "upgraded" their famous French dinner, it was good volume and fairly delicious, but far from French cuisine, unfortunately- they should have said French Japanese fusion or something else. Breakfast was very good - various range and various type of food.
The main event of the stay was their eco-tour. We put on snow protection and snow shoe and walked around the path around this facility- it was fun. The nature guide pointed out some animal's footprint and explained their activities on the snow.
This place was equipped with laundry machine- we luckily washed all our dirty clothes and packed up again (I don't like carrying dirty clothes for days).
Overall, it was a good stay, but the price is a bit steep- I totally understand maintaining this big place at rural area costs quite a lot...
If you have kids, this place is highly recommended. Of course, without kids, this place provides so much fun stuff to adults as well.

Located in the mountains, tucked away from the tourist packed Shirakawago, this hotel offered a refreshing experience to our Japan trip. It was snowing when we stayed here in April, providing a scenary which was in stark contrast to that in Shrakwago. The hotel had an interesting architecture and the nature guide in the morning was a pleasant experience. And the French dinner course was parfait. Choose the full course option- You don't want to miss the beef. It was so tender that it could melt in your mouth.
