This was my second visit to Neemrana Group of hotels after my amazing experience in Fort Cochin last year.

I decided to go here after the article of the city and hotel in Simply Chennai Aug 2013 edition of INDIA TODAY magazine. There was a number provided for booking this hotel - 09750816034 - which was never picked up.

The GATE HOUSE another property of the Neemrana Hotels is at the entrance of the town gate. The rooms there would cost Rs.3000/- ( buts a small walk from the main hotel THE BUNGALOW IN THE BEACH) . FOOD IS NOT PROVIDED here, so u have to walk back to the main hotel for your morning breakfast and for any other meal you want in the day.

THE BUNGALOW IN THE BEACH has lots of rooms. We got the ground floor - ELEPHANT( right opposite the reception) which costed Rs.4000/-. One side when we opened the door we could see the Fort Dansborg and the other door when opened faced the Sea. The toilets were VERY SMALL. Through out the night you could hear the waves on the beach. Morning you wake up to the church bell/ alarm and listen to a Bible verse every hour.

We checked in late in the night , around 9:30 pm. The hotel staff were kind to provide us dinner in our room , as the kitchen is closed and most staffs leave by 10 :00 pm. We ordered Sea food and the quantity, quality and taste was delicious.

They DONOT serve liquor ( not even beer!!!). But don't mind chilling and serving the liquor you have bought outside.

NO TV in any room - nice to live that way.

Breakfast was the usual continental style with eggs to order. Masala omelette was very good.

We had to leave cos they have a check out time of 12 noon.

Only sad part was the swimming pool was dirty green in color and INFESTED with insects. We wanted to swim in the pool ( which is always an integral part of Neemrana Hotels).

We had a short stay but cherished the ambiance and feel of 16th century atmosphere. I recommend you come for atleast two days , enjoy the swim , beach- just RELAX and UNWIND

We stayed at this bungalow for a day and below are my quick observations:

What’s good:
1. Great view of the ocean and nice breeze (breeze on first floor only)
2. Spacious rooms with antique feel,
3. Walk-able distance from all tourist attractions in Tranquebar
4. Could book easily over phone, without any issues

What’s not so good:
1. Highly customized for Danish tourists, hardly anything Indian in the menu. For breakfast plain Dosa was added recently because of Indian guests, otherwise has a pure continental menu
2.Very few English books,
3.Campus was under maintenance during our visit (July), with gardens not maintained. But this may not be the issue all through the year (I read May, JUne is their off season, guess maintenance work planned for these months has spilled over to July)
4.Aging AC units and few other minor nuisances
5. Missing pieces in the chess set
6. Our tariff included evening and morning tea, but wasn't offered voluntarily. Had to remind them to serve it. (Would have been nice if they'd asked what time we'd like the tea to be served)
7. Bathrooms are narrow by palace standards

Overall, there're not many stay options in Tranquebar, hence I would still recommend this place, but be careful to ensure your preferences are met

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms (Rs 4000) do not get enough breeze due to compound wall, Ask for first floor ones. Only 3 rooms in first floor are facing ocean (QUeen Anna Sophia and 2 others) and rest face the opposite side. If you're particular about sea view, ensure that you're selecting the right room

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your valuable review about The Bungalow on the Beach heritage hotel in Tranquebar.

As you may be aware, every effort has been made to retain the original structure of the bungalow, which dates back to the 17th century.

We are pleased to inform you that we have recently incorporated South Indian dishes to the menu for greater variety and guest satisfaction.

Your observations have been noted and we shall be taking the requisite action at the earliest. It is our endeavour to constantly improve our services and feedback such as yours helps us to do so.

We thank you for your visit and look forward to welcoming you back soon !

Currently staying at the hotel and given the ample time one has I thought id write a review

The good stuff-The Governor of Tranqubar's residence has been restored beautifully and converted into a hotel. Kudos to the Neemrana group for that. The location couldn't be better too, overlooking the sea and right next to the Tranquebar fort.

The not so good stuff- There isn't much to see beyond the two (beautiful) churches. I had interacted with the reservation staff for 2 weeks before I made my reservation, but only after I paid fully (in advance) was I told that the swimming pool was under renovation (but there is a pool in their nearby property that can be used), I felt that was not being upfront.

The menu is fairly limited and the service is relaxed and customer comfort at its barest possible acceptable level. They will not deviate from the small menu, they often ended up not having very basic stuff available. Also when I asked for wifi I was told it wasn't working, subsequently I asked for a DVD player, which also I was informed wasn't working. If this was to be a homestay type arrangement, then they should be charging these high tariffs. The staff are pleasant but you will keep hearing 'no,s quite often. So it's a non hotel in many ways.

Mixed experience in all. There doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to visit another time.

Room Tip: first floor rooms have the best view of the sea!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your valuable review about The Bungalow on the Beach heritage hotel in Tranquebar.

We are pleased to learn that you thoroughly enjoyed the location of the property and the sound of the singing waves.

With reference to your feedback about the annual maintenance about the pool, please note that the tiles of the pool were damaged and to avoid an accident the property had to take immediate action. Thus the reservations team too did not have advance notice. The hotel team had made arrangements for resident guests to use the swimming pool at the Gate House which is also a Neemrana property and in close proximity (300 metres) to The Bungalow on the Beach. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused.

We have noted your feedback about the menu and have already added more variety to the same. We do hope that you will give our Chefs a chance to please you whenever you choose to visit next.

Further, the hotel management has been pulled up and instructed to ensure that the wi-fi and the DVD player are always in a good working condition. We are very sorry for the trouble that you had to face you. We thank you for your visit and do hope that you will give us a chance to overlay your past experience with a fresh and memorable one.

Warm Regards,
Team Neemrana

This cute hotel lives up to its name of a non-hotel hotel. An old Colonial style building, it has an expansive verandah which gives unhindered view of the sea in all its splendour. The food is passable but they are willing to serve whatever you want. The staff are cheerful, helpful and unobtrusive. Thank God, there is no calling bell in any of the rooms. No disturbance every now and then. This is a perfect place if you want to unwind. By the way, they claim that this place has the highest level of ozone which adds to the wellness factor.

Room Tip: We stayed at The Prince of Denmark room which had a great view of the sea.
