Despite a rainy day, this was a great morning activity to enjoy seeing much of the wildlife that Costa Rica has to offer. We had the honor of seeing both white face and howler monkeys, crocodiles, Jesus Christ lizards, and coatimundis. This is a great ride to relax and enjoy nature. Do have lunch at Cosona Hacienda El Viejo. The restoration of the property is notable and the arroz con pollo is excellent.

The Hacienda El Viejo Wetland tour is a must when visiting Costa Rica. The boat tour takes you down the Tempisque River and also through the casona (big house) inhabited by previous owners of the property, including Somosa, the previous dictator of Nicaragua. Our guide, Hernan, spoke perfect English, but was patient with our attempting Espanol also. He was extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife on the water and on land. He also explained the economy, ecology, and flora of this beautiful country. He also had a nice sense of humor and accommodated everyone in the group. The captain of our boat, Jorge, had incredible eyes for spotting animals. We saw crocodiles of all ages and sizes, white-faced monkeys, lizards, motmots and other birds, scarlet macaws, miniature, long nosed bats lined up down the tree. It was an amazing day. This spot is closer to the Flamingo beach area than Pal Verde, which gives tours on the same river.

We signed up for the tour and were picked up and dropped of at our hotel, had a wonderful lunch, and our guide Hernan was delightful. He was with us not only on the tour, but also on the hour long drives to/from our hotel. His knowledge of both the his country and the nature was vast, and his english was excellent. Highly recommended.

Last week we spent a day with Tour Guide John and driver Salvador visiting the Guanacaste wetlands. It was an amazing day and well worth the time and money. John did a wonderful job teaching us about the wildlife and vegetation of Guanacaste and of Costa Rica as well. He is very well prepared and very skilled in his work. Salvador was helpful in pointing out animals and sights along the way. We rode the ziplines with Hernan, who is also very well versed in the Guanacaste region and very hospitable as well. He made us feel safe throughout the rides. The boat captain, Jacinto, was superb, pointing out crocodiles and coati mundis and other wildlife. All in all, it was an outstanding day. We recommend this tour to anyone who wants to have fun while learning about this beautiful natural setting. Thank you, John, Hernan, Salvador, and Jacinto, for hosting our very special day.

If you are looking for a wonderful way to see the wildlife and not be crammed on a boat with others this is the way to go. The guides were terrific, friendly and informative. The guide and boat Captain spotted crocodiles, white faced monkeys, howler monkeys and a variety of birds for us to see up close. They shared a wealth of information about the river, wildlife and environment. The grounds of the refuge and wetland are gorgeous. Sugar crops make up a large part of the grounds and drive to the main building and river. We were planning on taking another more advertised river boat trip but after driving up the very long rock and dirt road we discovered they did not take credit cards and being we were doing this on our own and not through a tour it was going to be a disappointment until they very thoughtfully called up the road to El Viejo to see if they had availability on a boat tour, which they did and they accept credit cards. We were pleasantly surprised being the only 4 on the boat with the captain and guide. The gift shop is beautiful. It was a wonderful way to end our trip to Costa Rica and I suggest for anyone to go here for this boat adventure.
